Yes but there is a big diference between Baer on an off night and Baer with the devil inside him. You could say with some justification that Marciano would undoubtedly bring his A game while Baer may or may not.
Baer was inconsistant on his best night he could give Marciano trouble, its true he lost to Uzcudon and Risko ,but he kod Schmeling who beat them both,Which Maxie turns up is the question?
I think Baer brought his A game into the Louis fight. It didn't help him. His defense simply wasn't good enough. That straight right down the middle that Marciano threw would be a very dangerous weapon against a fighter who was as wide open as Baer generally was.
I agree that Marciano would probably tag Baer more than vice versa. I just think that he is going to have to walk through the wall of death (perhaps literaly) to win this fight. There are certain fantasy fights where I am sort of glad that they never took place like Dempsey Marciano. This one is in the same bracket.
I completely disagree. Did Louis had to walk through the wall of death to beat Baer? It was an easy night for him as he could basically tee off on his opponent without any trouble. Even the jab couldn't miss. Marciano, too, would land punch after punch and after a few rounds, something's gotta go, and it aint Marciano. You don't beat a great puncher when your defence consists of sticking your chin out and having your hands down.
I don't see too many things speaking for Baer in this one. He had brutal power, but I have a hard time seeing him connect cleanly with his right. And he would need a clean hit (probably several) to take out Marciano. Marciano would, on the other hand, not have too many problems connecting cleanly on Baer. Due to Baer's durability I think this one could turn into a quite prolonged and brutal beating.
