He very clearly understands what potential means, and described it in his last post. He said it was too soon to tell what his potential is based off of what he has done against lower class fighters. You can't really tell until you've seen them in there with the top guys and they've proven themselves. Then it's time to start making comparisons.

    :happy

Some posters here act as if you can compare any two fighters or entities if you throw in the word "potential" and get away with it.

Yeah, don't take into consideration the fact that Stevenson never fought fighters on the level of a guy like Napoles. Also, fail to take into consideration that Napoles was very clearly a better, more talented, and complex fighter than Stevenson ever was. To be quite frank, I think another of the Cuban HW's in Felix Savon was better than Stevenson in terms of skills and world class potential(even though I think he didn't prove much either).

Absolutely no case whatsoever can be made that either fighter was better or more accomplished on a world stage than a brilliant, accomplished ring master like Jose Napoles.

I personally thing that the cuban boxing wave is overrated and doesn't always equal success in the pro ranks.

Just because you're a good amateur doesn't grant success in the pro ranks and the fact that there's no pro sports allowed in Cuba - has people wondering what the deal is about these guys.

I think that some cubans showed good promise in their amateur careers but they're straight up and down fighters ... who are good at racking up points. (atleast the cubans as of late)

If anything they are great amateur boxers ... just like the russian school of boxing ... just great at the amateurs.

What's "had" is your lame argument - all non sequitur. You chose to dissect and botch Kellerman's statement for your own biased amusement. I simply busted your weak argument stating the exact same analogy of fitgerald which whom YOU agreed with. But you YOU act like Max said something other than what was stated. GTFOH with your bull****.

I guess I am going to have to explain this to you the way a father would explain to a son.

While it is definently too early to say Gamboa is not the fighter Napoles is, it is also too early to say he has the potential to be the fighter Napoles is.

If you try hard enough, this isn't too hard to follow.

You would have to be an utter fool to act as if this is a contradiction on my behalf. Me saying "correct" is an acknowledgment of the arguement of Fitz, not an agreement with it.

Stop grasping at straws, my arguement has been consistent throughout the thread. The fact that you can't follow it, or even follow your own arguement, doesn't change that.

Max has always been a cheerleader and *****. I finally got to watch the fight. I am going by so many threads and posts about Gamboa. Now, are you kidding me. This was a horrible fight and ass kissing commentary. I loved the fact that Lederman just finished ass kissing and then Max finished his and boom, Gamboa goes down. Lennex kept contradicting himself. Why is he even on HBO? Gamboa has speed, elusiveness, power, and good footwork. His defense is horrible. His trainer wiping his sweaty forehead and then wiping his tougue. His whole corner seemed to be talking about how to properly bake a cake because it did not look like Gamboa was listening to anything they were saying. Now, they are talking about slowing the process. He most difinitely is not ready to jump to bigger fish. I could see this guy getting knocked out soon if they do move him quickly. I heard someone say he could fight from 126 to 147 someday. Bull****, the guy is only 5'3 and would get hurt at 135 and up. He is 26 with over four hundred amatuer fights. By the looks of him he is going to have weight problems and would have to move up to the sharks. I have been watching so many fighters coming up and I don't see this guy going too far. One of you members mentioned that maybe he needs to get rocked or knocked out to learn. Are you kidding? He relies on speed and if he got knocked out...well he could turn into a worse post Camacho. A whole new corner would help and stop the weight lifting, it shows.

Well, the current crop of Cuban stars are doing quite well. Both Gamboa and Solis have already stepped up the comp within their first 10 pro fights. Fighters who have come out of the Cuban amateur system haven't necessarily gone on to become ATG's but they have, for the most part, enjoyed very good careers. Joel Casamayor is and has always been a tremendous fighter and has never been blown out by anybody. Every loss he has is disputable. Juan Carlos Gomez is a fighter who we haven't really had the luxury of seeing all that often cuz he fights out of Germany but he's had a very good pro career. 10 defenses of his title at cruiserweight and a pretty decent resume at heavyweight. There have been hits and there have been misses (Jorge Luis Gonzalez, Garbey) but overall, the Cuban amateurs have parlayed their skills into pretty solid professional careers. We'll just have to wait and see what happens with Gamboa and these others.
