You're badly over-exagerrating. Gamboa is still clearly the best prospect in the world, and has boatloads of talent. He needs to work on a few technical flaws, but the kid is very impressive.

They're so successful on the amateur level that the hype just comes with the territory. Silver medals are disappointments as far as they're concerned.

 

I have to agree with you somewhat, but I don't think the Cuban fighters are overrated. Much blame goes to the Castro regime. I use to study all the fighters of the past and there were so many good Cuban fighters and champions in the 1930's to I believe the late 1950's. To have to quickly adapt to the pro's as soon as they defect. It is not easy especially if you are fighter over 400 amatuer fights in a certain style and now you have to pick-up a new style. It hurts more if you are in your late twenties.

 

How am I over-exagerrrating? He is a prospect period. Stop using "great". Technical flaws? How many fights has he had as an amatuer already. Yes, the pro's are much different, but we are not talking about a 18 to 20 year old. He is talented, but the bus has gone and he has to catch up yesterday. He is going to have weight problems sooner than later. Then he will not have any choice to go up to 135 or 140. Again, at 5'3 and getting clocked as much as he does, well it spells BUST. Also, what all of his managment and corner are all blind to see what he needs to work on. Why the hell would you throw him in with Jimenez and embarass him like that. They possibly thought " hey, Jimenez has been off for one year, what could he possibly bring". Surprise, Jimenez hit him way too often. If Jimenez had power, this thread would be about how overrated he was and who said he was great, next.

Nice contradiction. First you basically say he doesn't have much room to improve as a fighter, and then you say he'll eventually have weight problems. Why? If he's already 26 years old and has been fighting this way for a long time, why do you think he'll eventually have weight problems? After all, as you yourself said, it's not like he's 18 or 20 years old. He's fully into his body.

Also, you don't take into account that he's fighting less than elite fighters and has a very good chin as shown thus far. Also, would you people stop acting like he can't improve? It's the pro game, he has adjustments to make, and he will. It's not like he's done improving as a pro after 10 fightsm, regardless of his amateur career.

And he's 5'5.

Yeah, he was throughly embarassed winning every single round aside from a flash KD(in which he won the rest of the round) and turning Jimenez's face into mush. Also, as his cornerman very clearly was talking about afterwards, he has many things he needs to work on, defense most of all.

Jimenez had nothing but early KO's in his last 8 wins, was an accurate puncher, and hit him with clean shots, hardly phasing Gamboa throughout the fight.

He sure did react a whole hell of a lot better to a clean punch than the guy in your avatar.

I thought I heard Max say he is 5'3. I also heard one of them say he weighed 140 or 141. Where? The guy looks like he has not one ounce of fat on him. He also has the frame of a individual that lifts weights which is a no, no at lower weights.

What contradiction? Sure he has some room. I am being sarcastic. Yes, he won 9 out of 10 rounds. He was suppose to. The man was off for one year and in another thread they are calling Jimenez a b or c fighter. Oscar at that weight and not many fights was much better I believe.

I was answering your "best prospect" to just prospect. Chavez, Jr is a better prospect at this time and he did not have any amatuer fights.

That's the one, the one who took a clean punch and decided to give a rest to fulfilling his "Macho Man" moniker.

He's 5'5 according to his listing, and that looks about right. He's not that short.

He's stocky yes, but he's fully developed. So unless you mean he'll have to move up in weight when past his prime, I don't get you.

You talked about his skills as if he was done improving because of his age and development, and then stated that he would eventually have to move up due to weight problems when he reaches his prime. If you consider him to already be in his mature prime then why not his physical prime?

Oscar was a more conservative fighter for sure, but he didn't have the potential I don't think, not at that weight.

Jimenez was clearly a good fighter too, though not as good as some are saying. Gamboa did handle him very well, despite his flaws and what should've been a difficult matchup given his flaws. His ability got him through it so well. When he perfects his flaws, he'll be on a whole nother level.

We will just have to VERY STRONGLY disagree on this one.

I have yet to hear an American commentator say that a Cuban "has the potential to be one of the greatest boxers". No, instead they specify: "one of the greatest Cuban exile" like if a Cuban-born boxer can't be in the same league as American boxers.

 

Oscar at 130 would have knocked out Jimenez and Gamboa ....

Camacho would have beat the living sh*t out of Jimenez and toyed with Gamboa
