I have never been a fan of Larry Merchant but I respect his background and rhetorical gifts.

Zakman -- thanks for the heads-up on the Max/Cayton relationship. Always wondered how Max got the 'ins' that he had.

Rui-- I'm not sure you're helping Max's case here. You sound like you would describe a Max defecation as pleasantly aromatic.

I agree with Zakman, Max hasn't 'earned' anything. That said, he does have good knowledge of the sport, brings passion, is a good observer and articulate. Not as articulate as Merchant, but that's ok. Larry can be a seemingly-drunk, cranky SOB but he's good with words. Unfortunately, Larry often gets so caught up with his turn of phrases that things like guys getting knocked out become nothing more than props for his next sentence.

Max reminds me of a kid playing dress-up as a boxing commentator. The suit's a little too big, the microphone wobbles a bit too much during the interviews and the over-the-top pronouncements a bit too forced. Hopefully this will improve as time goes on.

I'm sure that there are better, more-qualified guys out there than Max Kellerman to serve as an HBO commentator. He's not bad, however, and he makes it fun to come to places like ESB and create threads such as the one we're writing in here.

 

max kellerman has always been biased towards his fighters e.g. Marquez the best featherweight in the greatest featherweight era. How? a loss and draw v pac barely beat a shot barrera. this guy is a disgrace. people in his position should not be biased.

Berto is a mediocre fighter who has fast hands, and decent power. Thats it.

 

Like I said..if Max is on HBO for the next 30 years...that will be a **** load of fights I will be watching on TV with the volume OFF:yep

I'm glad he said that, they're giving Williams the recognition he DESERVES and recognition Margarito fans get bruised in the ass when they hear.

It was perfectly fine for him to talk about how Margarito is the most feared beast only a few months ago but now that he's talking about Williams he should be fired?

 

And what about Mayweather beating an old ODLH and a hardly qualified Welter?
