Max Kellerman : Why Aren't Andre Ward and Gennady Golovkin PPV Stars Like Mayweather

There's an interview in the late eighties or early nineties with Ray Leonard where people are amazed at the kind of money he made, like 150-200 million dollars. He said, that's nothing compared to what boxers after me are going to be making. Enter Oscar De La Hoya who cleans up 300-400 million, Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield making 500 million, and lately Mayweather and Pacquiao with 500-600 million each. Purses keep getting bigger. Partly it's just inflation though. Ali, Robinson, Louis, and Tunney made pretty good bank in their day too.

 

Mayweather's first PPV was Gatti and it did 340k buys. The purse was slightly in Gatti's favour, however.

He then had 375k buys as the legit A-side against Judah. That's when he became a star in his own right - and that's why a fight with Oscar made him the king. He did 325k in a fight with Baldomir too.

Exactly, after they fought De La Hoya Mayweather and Pacquiao's pay per view sales both tripled. It comes from all the extra exposure their fights with him gave them. Partly it exposed them to new fans, and partly it was a momentum thing since people will be more likely to buy another pay per view from a guy they've bought one from before. This is pretty common practice in building a star. De La Hoya built a lot of his base off of Julio Cesar Chavez. Hopkins had to beat Trinidad to become a star, etc.

 

Kovalev doesn't have many fans of his own I been hearing. So how is beating him going to get you exposure. The belts right?

I'm canadian and ufc isn't very big here unless there is a canadian on the card. I bet in a lot of europe ufc isn't that big

 

One problem with boxing today is there is way too much "fanboy media" people. They need to clean that it up a little and get some serious media in there that asks the rights questions. No just suck up to the fighters.

 

I agree to an extent that FLoyd was caught in a "perfect storm" but remove Oscar from that storm and your post falls flat.
