Last night, Max Kellerman was gushing with praise for Andre Ward. Ward fought dirty as usual, clinching a lot, holding his opponent's arm, and using deliberate headbutts. However, Max was bashing Wladimir for holding, during the fight with Povetkin, and also discrediting Wlad's career even before the fight started, saying (as he always does) in as many words that Wlad is no good and he's only heavyweight champion because the heavyweight division is no good. Kellerman was also discrediting Wlad's opponent Povetkin before the fight started, saying Sasha wasn't really an Olympic Gold Medal winner because his opponent was injured before the final as if he wanted to launch a pre-emptive strike to diminish Wlad's upcoming win (he didn't mention Povetkin was world amateur champion in 2003 as well). In contrast, Kellerman was repeatedly saying Rodriguez was "the best available opponent" and "the best super middleweight Ward hasn't already beaten". Now, Wlad was indeed clinching too much in the fight with Povetkin, it's undeniable. But Ward is a far dirtier fighter, not only clinching a lot but using illegal tactics like headbutts, most evident in round 12 last night. Kellerman never questions Ward's tactics. Kellerman repeatedly suggests Golovkin move up to 168 to fight Ward, but never suggests Ward move up to 175 and fight Hopkins, Kovalev or Stevens. Max never questions why Ward insisted Dawson fight him at 168 (in fact it was Max who first suggested Dawson move down), and never questions why Ward generally fights at home and had all four officials last including referee Jack Reiss from Ward's home state of California. Wlad has had an even more impressive run at heavyweight than Ward has at super middleweight, but Kellerman refused to recognize it, while constantly gushing with praise for Ward's achievements. Max Kellerman goes by a very obvious double standard.
Simply can't compare Grabimir and Andre Ward. Its not possible to compare the two, and if you do you're either a troll or utterly ******ed.
Kellerman is the worst commentator in boxing. I don't know why anybody gives any credence to what this unqualified twerp says. They plucked this clown from cable access obscurity and put him on ESPN. when he had done NOTHING to deserve it - hadn't worked as boxing journalist, hadn't been a boxer or trainer, nothing. All he had was family connections. So here were are years later and this joker is still every bit as unqualified because he never paid any dues, never learned **** about boxing. Is it any wonder this POS keeps spewing ignorant bull**** on HBO?? He should never have been put on TV in the first place - and wouldn't have been if his rich family hadn't pulled strings!
I failed to see any headbutts but I did see some questionable low blows , back of head punching, not breaking and arm holding from Ward. It was a nasty fight for Ward but Rod was doing his share as well. I felt the ref was sucking Ward off most of the fight.:think Max is not going to challenge his co host :smoke
actually, it was Rodriguez engaging in most of the holding and dirty fighting. anyways, you can't compare that grabfest with Ward-Rodriguez.
Remember how the last thread you started on Kellerman ended up being deleted? Go back to castefootball
I have found Kellerman to be knowledgeable but I agree that he is too pro-HBO fighters. Ward is part of their stable and therefore he gives him gleaming praise. It is inappropriate for him to call UP Golovkin to fight Ward at his natural weight. It is obvious Golovkin is very comfortable at his current fighting weight. He should not move up to fight Ward.
I am one of the biggest Wlad fans on here but that fight with Povetkin stunk and I wish the ref did what the ref last night did and cleaned it up Ward I thought was very exciting, very aggressive, lots of combos, big left hooks and solid jabs. I thought Rodriguez made the fight boring due to his inability to compete in there Kellerman to me makes some dumb calls but he can be the one to call for the non HBO guy and often steps in against Lampleys cheerleading
He has his opinions you have yours, who cares. Plus, the job description of a fight commentator is to make the fight as interesting for the viewer as possible. Sometimes that requires a bit of spin. For Wlad/Pov there just wasnt anything to spin. I disagree with Lampley and Kellerman quite often, but it does not mean they are bad at their jobs. Honestly I think lots of the hate must be jealousy, because frankly I think just about anyone who spends time posting on a boxing fansite probably really just wishes they could have that job.. I know I do.
