Max was a fanboy first and foremost and it's nothing new with his comments regarding Whitaker (which I happen to mostly agree with), if he makes such a statement on Roy he should include Roy's positive steroid result as well as the numerous Top European fighters he failed to face. As for Floyd, another case of too many missed fights on the resume. Tszyu, Margarito, Manny. He retired right in prime (what was the reason for that).

Nah, I think prime Chavez fully deserved his status at the time, and I think at times Paquiao probably deserved that honour as well, though with Floyd around it was likely sporadic. Tyson in '88 seemed a force of nature and a good argument can be made for his ranking there at the time as well.

I think that Floyd, Pea and Jones were more clear cut as P4P best as opposed to those mentioned above though.

Not so impressed with Kellerman, he said fighter of the year should go to Bradley & the win that gets him there is the PAC fight which everyone knows was a loss

    This.

The astute observer may notice that Max does not like his fighters from any country but the US and in any mold but Olympic Golden Boy with the heavily funded early career and ballyhoo to accompany.

Not that I disagree as to the greatness of any three, but Chavez needs to be in there... and perhaps... shudder... Pac.

All had long stretches of fighting nothing but bums. They were all heavily hyped from day 1 and had an easy ride to the top.

Pernell struggled with plenty of fighters but when the scores were read it was 120-108 and people bought it. He should have got the nod vs. Ramirez in their first fight but it was closer than a lot of people will admit. We deserved the win vs. Chavez as well but again it was closer than many will admit. Oscar? I had it even. Pernell fought the best fight he could have fought, Oscar did not. Oscar still did enough not to lose though.

Jorge Paez and even Anthony Jones gave Whitaker trouble. Nelson came up to LW for the first time and gave him trouble... think I had him up by two points after 12. McGirt dropped him several times and really gave him a lot of trouble in their first despite an injured shoulder.

Pure fan boy comments from Kellerman, but we know which fighters he likes, and dislikes.

So, who else may have been #1 since '88/'89?

Some may think one of these guys... Michael Nunn, James Toney (wasnt a fan of either), Virgil Hill, JCC, Meldrick Taylor, Terry Norris, DeLaHoya, Mosley,Trinidad, Michalczewski, Hopkins, Calzaghe, Michael Carbajal, Ricardo Lopez, Barrera, Morales, Pacquiao, Juan Marquez, Holyfield, Tyson, Byrd... opinions are like azsholes, everybody has one and most stink

If Kellerman can dismiss all Mexican fighters of the last 25 years, he has got to be a *****.

How many Mexican fighters of the past 25 years can be considered as ever having been #1 P4P? Anyone but JCC?

This is true. He was a wanna-be-rapper along with his brother when he was a kid. When James Butler cheap shot Richard Grant on live TV and looked to have killed him Max spouted a bunch of righteous indignation about how if Butler ever were allowed to box on ESPN again he would quit working for the company. Flash forward 3 years and surprise surprise Butler is living with Kellerman's brother and, what a shocker, murders him when Sam Kellerman tried to kick him out of the apartment. The point is that these guys have the blinders on for black fighters, particularly if they are perceived as being part of the "hip hop" lifestyle. To say that these three are the only clear P4P fighters of the past 25 years or so is nuts. Ive never been a big fan of Whittaker but I give him credit for facing tough competition and winning (although like others I feel some of those victories were closer than most believe) but how can you call fighters like Mayweather and Jones, whose careers are notable for lack of quality wins, "clear" P4P fighters. Ive thought about this often: Most on here know I cant stand Jones and think his career after Toney was all fluff. On the other hand Mayweather has a lot more marquee wins than Jones BUT its interesting in that in nearly every one of those fights I had no doubt as to the winner. Not because Mayweather was THAT good but because the opponent was carefully selected at that time and place for specific weaknesses that played to Mayweather's strengths. Because of this, even with Mayweather's more recognizable names on his resume, its hard for me to decide whose resume is worse. Either way, neither guy is anywhere near what some in the media have tried to build them up and I suspect outside of a few fanboys like Kellerman their careers will be remembered much like Terry Norris (someone Id bet Kellerman loved also) after they retire: Massive hype but on close inspection completely underwhelming.
