I just think that Jones was one of the most gifted athletes ever seen, but too much of a fraud for my liking.

Retrospectively we know he was pretty much right:

from 89-93 Whitaker was the best in the sport
93-03 Jones was the best in the sport
03-14 - Mayweather is probably the best in the sport - although maybe not right now, who knows and he was on vacation for 2 years but was still probably the best during that time.

I believe Mike Nunn was the best from '87 to '91 and Toney the best from late '92 to mid '94 (when weight was steady), and Hopkins was the best from '97 to '04 for me.

Even Hopkins knew he wasn't the best from '97-'04

Nunn could have been 1 of the greatest but didn't refine his talent. Not really in the Whitaker bracket

He was beyond it and on his own. People forget how unbeatable Frank Tate was supposed to be, undefeated Olympic gold-medalist world champion with great boxing skills - rated the #1 '84 US Olympian ahead of Whitaker and Holy and Meldrick. Nunn completely blew FT (and us all) away with his talent and ability.
