Anyone seen this film? I'd never even heard of it until I saw it in HMV yesterday. German subtitles but not a bad movie. It's even got Arthur Abraham playing one of his later opponents!
Yep, foreign language is usually a good indication of a **** film :huh I ain't seen it, I've watched his fights instead, ain't interested in a movie about him. But someone I know will be, so thanks for bringing it to my attention :good
Funnily enough I was just looking at this in Asda about 20 mins ago, this is the Henry Maske one isn't it? isn't there one called Max & Joe or something where Maske plays Schmeling or was it this film re-named?
Haven't seen it, but I remember watching a film called Joe & Max with Til Schweiger playing Schmeling.
I bought it the other week. Not too bad actually. The boxing isn't too bad either, sort of realistic. What was strange was how everybody talks German in it, even the Americans and the Brits. I'm not sure how realistic it is as i don't know too much about Schmelling's life/career other than the Joe Louis fights. (A German speaking Joe Louis is a sight to behold!) I know he was in the Fallschirmjager (German Paras) as shown in the film and he was reported missing. Like a lot of German films coming out about the war years, it is rather rammed down your throat that Max was never a Nazi which, from my limited knowledge is pretty true. I enjoyed it but in some parts it just lacked something; i can't put my finger on it! Maske looks the part but his voice is terrifying, as i imagine SNV talks and his acting isn't great. Well worth a watch though. Oh, and the dvd cover showing a tank busting through the walls and flames everywhere...this does not happen in the film. Oh, and Max's bird. Pretty rough. Almost skeletal. Alright if that's your game i suppose.
