If you keep a list, where do you have each? (don't need your full list, just the # for each man within the top 20 - unless either/both is outside your top 20...then just a ballpark # will do).

When you compare the two, how confidently do you feel in having the one ranked above the other? How open are you to switching them around? (keeping in mind the implications of how that affects their positional relationship to everyone you have between them).

At the end of the day, who is the greater HW in your estimation? Why?

Is that also the person you'd pick to win if they met in a fantasy match?

I think that Schmeling has to be considered greater.

Bowes wins over Holyfield are verry impresive, but outside that his resume is a bit thin.

Head to head I also like Schmeling, but I am far from confident.

    Bowe's prime was excruciatingly short.

    Schmeling is greater.

    Louis
    Ali
    Rocky
    Johnson
    Holmes
    Foreman
    Lewis
    Dempsey
    Liston
    Tyson
    Frazier
    Sullivan
    Jeffries
    Langford
    Charles
    Walcott
    Wills
    Jeanette
    Tunney
    Patterson
    Fitz
    Baer
    Schmelling
    Sharkey
    Bowe
    Norton
    Willard

    Still active

    Holyfield (10)
    Wlad (15)
    Vitali (28)

That's a list based on resume, legacy and h2h in equal measure. This is how I measure greatness.

Was it to be based solely on h2h max would be a lot higher as would bowe also, just not as high.

1 thing about Bowe is, alongside Lewis (ironically), Tunney and Marciano he is in the select group of Lineal HWs who beat every man he faced (officially at least)

    Schmeling is better by achievement.

    Bowe is better H2H.

There are of course two dimensions to head to head.

Even if you think Bowe could beat Schmeling, could he get anywhere with Louis?

Head to head i just feel like favoring Bowe. That's a lot of burgers weighing down on you in an infight.

Bowe would be too big for Schmeling, and too powerful.

But Max is the greater heavyweight in terms of achievements and legacy. His win over a prime JOE LOUIS is not to be sniffed at!

I tend to think Max could finish what Golota started without going "downtown"
so I favor Maxie head to head and the resume for Big Daddy really ain't all that that big :?

I think Bowe is one of the major disapointments of the last 40 years - he had The size the talent and tools to be a long time, long term, dominant HW Champ and wasn't.

Not getting in the ring with Lewis hurts him more than it hurts Lewis.

Big Daddy needed to tame the LION and staying our of the cage didn't get it done.

H2H i strongly favour Peak Bowe ('92 Holy to '93 Holy II) to beat & stop any versions of Schmeling.

However, Bowe was a monumental underachiever for several reasons, thus Schmeling achieved more greatness.
