I find it fascinating that a boxer who's been in so many wars like Max Schmeling could live to be 100 years old. He died in 2005, so he lived through the 70's, 80's, and 90's era. Does anyone know his opinion on boxing was over time? What did Max think about Mike Tyson? Or Lennox Lewis? Or Klitschko?
There is a German Interview with Tyson with a line about Schmeling. It was about the supposed ****. Interviewer: Max Schmeling also was convinced that you are innocent. Tyson: The Great Max , who Knocked out Joe Louis , I can not believe it. I could cry to hear that. Interviewer : You sat with Max Schmeling and Governor Bob Miller at a banquet. Over 800 guests were invited to celebrate Schmeling. Because of its rescue of two Jewish children from the Nazis in November 1939 in Berlin was officially declared in 1989 in Nevada December 6 to "Max Schmeling Day". That night you said to Schmeling: "I did not like whites, but you I like very much." Tyson : Schmeling had already showed his big heart when he had a few thousand dollars for the funeral of Joe Louis. He was a real hero. Max Schmeling was not only a great boxer but also a wise human being.

The interviewer mentions how Schmeling was absolutely convinced of Tysons innocence, citing a dinner they had on the sixth of December 1989, celebrating his gallant act of rescuing two Jewish children in 1939. Tyson approached Schmeling and told him: "I don't like white people, but I do like you a lot".
Really interesting, thanks guys! I wonder what Max thought about Tyson as a boxer? Maybe compared to Joe Louis. Such a shame nobody did an in depth interview with Shcmeling about boxing.
Yes he was interesting. He wrote about year 2000 ...Dempsey was the big daddy.about the century's greatest fightet
Max Schmeling was a fascinating individual. I highly HIGHLY recommend his autobiography. One of the best boxing books Ive read.
Rez, Max Schmeling in 1994 wrote an autobiography printed in Germany and translated in English. I read this book about 12 years ago and it is an interesting read. At the end of the book he talks about the best fighters in all division, but talks about the ONE fighter he chose as in a special class above all others he had seen...It was Jack Dempsey, who Schmeling raves about, the greatest he had seen. Schmeling sparred with Dempsey when Dempsey visited Germany while still champion, and der Mox was a rising young heavyweight... The title of the book is Max Schmeling : An Autobiography 1994 by George Von der Lippe... I years ago borrowed the book from my local library...Check it out. Very good read...
