Me too. I read in an old Ring Mag that after the Schmeling fight,Walker told Kearns that he was the one who quit...he didn't!!!

you are all right to speak about schmeling in the high regard you do.
walker was really out-sized though...he had dead weight on him for that fight...even at the weigh-in when he was standing on the scales he was still smaller than schmeling. (and those old style scales were a good few inches off the ground).
walkers whole career is such a gift to look back on.

Never seen that before brilliant piece thanks. You really can see the Benton style L formation defense and even the crab at times.

This is one of my recent favorites

Schmeling highly underrated, he get lost in the shuffle because of the Louis rematch and the loss to Baer but he had some terrific wins and was highly talented and could punch and was very smart. On a good night he would be trouble for anyone. Mickey Walker had some heart, he looked like Mickey Rooney in there but he was rugged and went out like a warrior.

"he looked like Mickey Rooney in there"

You really know how to put a guy down.

*as an aside, I think Rooney did do a boxing film once, but I haven't seen it.

There is a hidden dimension to Schmeling's record.

He beat guys like Risko, Uzcdun, Stribling, Hamas etc, as many people did, but what gets lost is that he beat them at their hiatus in the rankings.

He basically seems to have gone after the highest ranked contender that he could get in the ring with, even if it happened to be Joe Louis, and usually dominated them.

This is a guy, who might have been a couple of millimeters off, being a top ten heavyweight.

I think you might want to research the meaning of "hiatus".

I like him but he is being over rated here .. he had no jab. he had no hook. He did not go to the body ... he was smart, well conditioned , had a good right hand and a big heart but let;s not go over board .. no doubt he was a hell of a fighter but to me not in an all time great class ..

    Perhaps "height" instead of "hiatus".
