Schmeling , at his best , against Johnson of the Burns fight ? Is Max in for a beating here or can he take the best of Johnson and given it back ?
I don't think Max would take a beating ,but I think he would lose a decision in a pretty dreary fight. Both liked to counter ,so no fireworks here imo.
Johnson was the master boxer and would win this bout by lopsided decision. Max would wait on openings all night but they would never transpire.
That's the thing with these two guys , countering . The only way I see a surprise upset is , Jack takin Max lightly and getting tagged by him via vicious right hand . But even then Jack , I believe had a lot better Chin than given credit by some . Over a vast amount of rounds ,say 30 plus ,I see JJ getting a ko win .
Schmeling liked you to lead so he could counter, that wouldnt work with Johnson. Whilst in Australia Jack visited the famous Larry Foley at his gym, when Jack said he made his opponents lead so he could feed off them,Foley declared nobody could make him take the initiative, this resulted in a bet and an impromptu spar between them.Neither man took the lead until Johnson ,getting close to Foley ,whispered something in his ear and the Australian in a rage attacked Johnson .Jack stabbed him with a couple of left jabs ,and tied him up grinning from ear to ear.
Schmeling is very clever himself and has better footwork than anyone Johnson was able to corral (on film, at least)... I'm leaning toward the best version of Max over the Burns' version of Johnson.
I think Schmeling might take this, depending on how much JJ manages to tie him up. At his best Max is quite impressive and a tough customer. I haven't really sat down to think about it tbh, this is a gut call.
