[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zx-W672FQzg[/ame] Some of this fight in DempseyWillard-esque in terms of pure savagery. Referees really didn't like stopping fights in those days. Schmeling was no joke. Hamas was an excellent boxer. Check his record. He'd won a decision against Schmeling in America the previous year, and this was a re-juvenated Schmeling in Germany. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Hamas never fought again. I'm not sure if he suffered any permanent damage from the beating, but frankly I'd be surprised if he did not. Then again, he was a college-educated young man. Perhaps he just had other options and valued his brain matter too much. Brutal stuff. Thanks to Raging_Bull for upload. :good
It's cool being able to hear what the referee is saying (before the bedlam breaks out). God only knows what the corner was thinking.
Schmeling, as it was said, was just pure murder once he had a guy going. Methodical and relentless all night.
No it wasn't..i agree. Schmeing didn't have the wild abandon of Dempsey. He was more cool and methodical..that right hand was a true weapon. He dished out a more measured, sustained beating than would Dempsey.
Sure. Willard ws actualy a viable world class fighter after Willard Dempsey. In this fight Hamas went from being a top 2 contender to a broken down old man overnight! The fact that Joe Louis took Schmeling for granted after this, is little short of incredible!
One of the rounds, I can't remember which one, actually looks worse than Dempsey-Willard, because at least Willard had the 'benefit' of being knocked down 7 times. Hamas, rendered defenseless, is just being knocked all over the ring. I don't know what was keeping him up.
