Max beat a prime Joe Louis in devastating and technical brilliantly fashion. That could be the greatest victory of all time. Archie Moore recorded some very good 2nd tier wins, but he never came close to beating an ATG prime heavyweight champion like Max did. I think Archie could present a number of problems for Schmeling with his punching power, counterpunching, left jab, and upperbody movement. However, Archie could be tagged with a right hand if it was a very good one, and schmeling had one of the best. I think he would time Archie and eventually catch up to him later in the fight, and then wear him down and finish him off. I know it will take more than a right hand to beat Archie Moore, but Schmeling had incredible precision, excellent upperbody movement, and he was a highly skilled boxer. Max Schmeling KO 10 Archie Moore
Schmeling KO's Moore in 11 rds...... Moore game early on, but gets hammered and stopped by Max's power later on... Also, Max had better footwork over Archie, thus, he evades much of Archie's attack.... Max wins.... MR.BILL
This comes up again and again and it´s bs everytime. Louis had what many people say was his best performance ever before he met Schmeling and already beat experienced contenders and two former champs. If he was green when he met Schmeling, Hopkins must have been a fetus when he met Jones. Schmeling KO between 10-12. Archie poses quite a few problems for Max but Schmeling´s footwork and faster feet, his positioning - he always stands at an awkward angle towards you - and precision take it home in the end.
Archie Moore never seemed to beat the truly elite 190-200 pounders of his day..... Moore was indeed aging by 1955 / 1956, but he still was a hard gym worker and generally in top shape when the big fight came about.... However, nobody can discount them pair of KO losses to "Marcy & Patty." I'm not sure Moore's birth has ever truly been proven to this day........ Moore claims the year '16, but his mom said it was '13....... WTF?? Moore was anywhere between age 39 to 42 when he was fighting for the heavyweight title against good / great dude's (Rocco & Floyd) in the middle 1950s.... MR.BILL
The Louis fight is somewhat irrelevant because Moore doesn't fight like Louis. It would be a very technical boxing match like Charles-Walcott, an interesting one to watch and I think a close contest
If we are talking prime against prime, Max Schmeling was a natural heavyweight in his prime, whilst Archie Moore was truly in his prime about 1943 when he was 30 years old [or more ?],as a lightheavyweight. In any case I have Max Schmeling beating any version of ole Archie of heavyweight Patterson, Marciano, vintage. P4P, a different story... P.S. there is speculation that Archie Moore was a sparring partner for Jem Mace ?
Louis was not green ,but he was overconfident and unfocused ,he ignored Blackburn's pleas to train diligently and, spent a lot of time playing golf, and doing the" mattress rumba". After destroying Charlie Retzlaff in 1 minute 58 seconds Louis thought he was Superman, he made a film" The Spirit Of Youth",he was recently married ,plus he was seeing Sonja Henie the ice skater among others. " When I entered training camp.I had the idea that I was going to do a lot of hard work for nothing." "I thought I could name the round I'd stop Schmeling" ". "I'd cut my training short and ,jump in the car and head for the golf course." " Instead of boxing 6rds,I'd box three.Punch the bag one round instead of two." Louis was f*****g allmost constantly , a beautiful new wife, Henie, plus there was a procession of female camp followers and he got around to as many as possible. "When I came to camp I weighed 216lbs and then I went down to 204lbs two weeks before the fight" "Everybody was upset ,Roxy, Black and Chappie,.Two times Roxy chased me off the golf course- I was dehydrating myself in the hot sun". " I was acting like a spoiled little boy" " Chappie kept bugging me about Schmeling's right hand punch.I told him ,if that was all I had to worry about, forget it." "Chappie kept warning me Schmeling would probably want me to lead with a jab, hoping I'd drop my left arm,and he'd get me with a right.I didn't listen". For the only time in his life ,Louis was complacent and, overconfident. Baer had kod Schmeling and ,Louis had destroyed Baer. Joe was 22years old and just got too full of himself. Louis was 198lbs for Schmeling ,the same weight as he scaled for perhaps his best ever performance his 4rds destuction of Max Baer, just 9 months earlier , but Louis was in terrific shape for Baer ,but had trained sloppily and, lost weight too rapidly for Schmeling. . This by the way, bears out what McGrain has been trying to explain to Mendoza in another thread., weight does not tell the whole story ,and regarding a fighters condition ,it is often grossly misleading.
Its an explanation of why Louis suffered his first loss. I call them reasons. But you do your own thing,I'm sure no one will be surprised.
