Two comparbly sized heavys from more or less the same era. One of them beat a young Joe Louis while the other took a slightly more seasoned one the ten round distance. Both beat their fair share of good contenders. Schmeling was a boxer-puncher while Pastor was more of a pure boxer.
I think that if Pastor could muster up some Tunneyesque discipline then maybe he could get a decision over Max...but that's a rather nebulous maybe, as Schmeling was so smart and resourceful a counterpuncher.
I would go for Schmeling, he was a good solid pro. The Max who beat Louis and Hamas in their second fight would stop Pastor late.
Good fight Pastor was a quality heavyweight who just couldn't topple Louis. I'd pick Max but this would be good fight.
I agree.. Schmeling should probably be favored but Pastor was a different type of fighter than one that Max was accustomed to. He didn't bring the fight to his opponents which would have made Schmeling's countering techniques difficult to execute. he made you chase him and was elusive. He was also pretty durable and had good stamina. It would be a tough test for Max.
I would say prime for prime Schmeling, but Pastor might well have done it on the actual timeline. They were both ranked in 1939, so they might have reached terms after the Louis fight, if the war had not taken place. The fight might even have been likely.
