    But he did fight his best black challenger, Jersey Joe Walcott, when Louis was way past his best, and then gave him a rematch

    Tough to analyze this stuff clearly when you let the nostalgia rule your thinking. I love the old fighters but in sports everyone knows athletes have improved for many reasons. It cant be denied in sports we can measure like track weightlifting swimming etc but in other sports you need to view with a logical dispassionate eye to see it but its there. Boxing is no different. That doesn't mean some weren't so good they couldn't be successful in more modern times. Also remember the way fights were held and refereed is different. So matchups would depend on what rules you'd fight with. With Dempsey they wanted fights to be shorter and more action packed. Those rules maybe Louis beats Johnson. Old rules with alot of clinching and wrestling allowed and really long fights I favor Johnson.

    In what rules Chuvalo looks better than Schmeliing? In a fight to finish maybe?
