The round four KD of Joe Louis didn't seem to have any kind of count. Were the rules different at the time or was it bad officiating? This is the first time I've watched a pretty much entire Joe Louis fight. I'm guessing he learned to not get caught with the right so much going forward? Like maybe he started keeping his left hand up more or something?
This is a legendary fight and one that I've been told every boxing fan should have seen. Strange that this is actually my first time watching it in full. Louis was out of shape going into this one, and you can tell just by watching him here, he isn't what he was vs Baer. But that's not Max's fault, he beat the second best heavyweight of all-time in his prime. Going into the twelfth, I had it 107/101 for Schmeling. Maxie's cross-counter was extremely good. Probably the best in heavyweight history up to this point. Schmeling's jab is good, too. He out-jabbed (admittedly, a pretty lethargic) Louis for most of the fight. He showed a good array of feints, and with his hands held low, he was very good at intercepting bodyshots. His defense upstairs reminds me of Loughran's - to a degree. Very relient on having something in their face, and having your feet in the right place so their positioning is all wrong. It worked though, so power to him. Monumental win.
Schmeling was brilliant in that fight. He waited for Louis to through the jab and when he lowered his right max would counter.
