People like to make out Schmeling is this antidote to boxers, Louis stood flat footed whilst dropping his left after throwing, I have no idea where that notion comes from, the fact is that Spinks was very good on his feet, better than Louis at that, and also didn’t drop his left hand after throwing unless he knew he was out of range, Spinks is elite and Schmeling is not, if he didn’t have that win over a green Louis, he’d be rated as a very mediocre champion, on the level of Sharkey or someone, Sharkey actually got the better of him over 2 fights, who is levels below Spinks and is also a boxer.

No, people don’t have Schmeling on the same level as Sharkey, they have him levels above in h2h matchups, had he not fought Baer people would comfortably be picking him against Baer and the same goes for Sharkey, it’s the win over Louis why people suddenly rate him a lot higher, but a lot of greats could be beaten by experienced guys when they were green, Schmeling won the title by DQ in a fight he was losing and made no successful defences and beat no one of note other than Louis and Sharkey which was a DQ whilst losing.

 

Would slightly favor Spinks via PED diff, Max is a more accomplished heavyweight though
