I haven't seen this fight before, as a Schmeling fan it's nice to see another fight. Paulino was tough boxer to fight against because of his crossarm defense and durability, but in later rounds Schmeling schooled him.

They both bent at the waist with their legs straight and stayed in front of each other. Wonder who the first heavyweight was who could use angles and an uppercut? He would have looked good against these two.

I've got this one on DVD. Uzcudun's style is rather interesting.

A Razor Ruddock smash might have ended this one very early.

Jack Johnson, he wasn't first but he used it very often.
Besides, both fighters used uppercuts in this fight.

Indeed, he was quite good and crafty defensively. Very good at smothering opponents inside. Doesn't look like a great offensive fighter though.

Interesting to see Schmeling's cross guard and compare it to fighters before and after him. And yeah, Uzcudun does have an odd style.

When do you think Max actually peaked? I think that he got better after 1st Sharkey fight, but I might be wrong.

I think Schmeling was a better athlete when he was younger. Max was Very busy in his fights up to the Stribling fight. He outworked people. What I have seen of him in fights after this Max was more calculating. The first Louis fight he was exceptional, but probably a busier and more athletic fighter in the stribling fight.

Thanks, interesting observation. I would like to see his KO against Hamas and later fights against Uzcudun. My logic came from two Sharkey fights - he actually looked better in second fight to me, even though he got robbed.

I just found Schmeling vs Hamas second fight on YT. Quality is poor, but Schmeling did terrible things to Hamas, the fight should have been stopped way earlier.

Joe Louis had an uppercut, he didn't look great against Schmelling in their first fight

Schmeling really battered Hamas. The referee lost control of the fight. Dreadful officiating.

Uzcudun was a pure inside fighter who tried to smother his opponents and had a tough defense. He was somewhat similar to Bonavena. This was a high output match for both fighters.

Both would have destroyed the likes of Bowe, Golota and Ruddock.
