Looked legit to me. Boxers are often quick to latch onto an excuse, but Sharkey himself never said it was a fix. He did apparently see Ernie Schaff's ghost in the ring though.
You need every advantage to beat the holy one the only ones who beat him are protected by fate, shielded by holy destiny bestowed upon them by the Preem himself.
I think if Sharkey could whip out a 15-round decision over Primo, nearly knocking him out several times, that the bigger, stronger, and superior Schmeling would defeat Carnera in a manner more similar to Baer's defeat of Carnera, rather than Sharkey's.
Just to be clear - Sharkey was bigger than Schmeling. Not better puncher, but he was heavier and stronger man.
I thought it was a pretty bad acting job by Sharkey. Primo Carnera was mob controlled. He had tremendous size and physique which made him a novelty they could sell. It's a sad story because he was propped up until it was time to cash him in. Primo was the last guy to find out he couldn't fight. He was used and discarded. I dont know if you've ever heard of a Gangster named Owny Madden. Research his name and you may change your view. Jack Sharkey was a victim to. He was advised to dump the heavyweight title. I don't blame him for being bitter. He has already beaten Carnera and I dont think he would of had any problem with him in a return.
I know who Owney Madden was. And Bill Duffy, Frenchy DeMange etc. Carnera caught Sharkey flush on the chin as he was coming in. Sharkey broke his nose when he hit the canvas face first (hard to fake...), so if he was faking I'm impressed at how far he was prepared to go to make it look good. Most fixed fights look terrible and obviously fake. Like I said, it looks legit to me. Sharkey never sounded bitter at all, just annoyed by the dive allegation, which he denied right to the end of his life, even when he was in his 90s and had nothing to lose or gain from telling the truth.
Carnera legitimately beat top level opponents. It's best to watch his fights. I'd pick Schmeling here by decision, but give Carnera a shot to upset as Max wasn't the most durable.
Never heard that Sharkey broke his nose in that fight,he never mentioned it in the interview with Heller. I think Sharkey took a dive,he interrupted training to go home and check on the health of his children, maybe that was the reason he took a swim.Anyway him falling forward looks phoney to me .I guess we will never know.
Sharkey was pretty much a 200 lbs in his prime. I see Sharkey as physically stronger than Schmeling based on their two fights. He handled Max rather well in clinches, he's just not the type of fighter who used it a lot to his advantage (quite a bit like Jersey Joe Walcott, who was stronger than Marciano). Of course Schmeling was harder hitter.
