There's kind of a double standard here though, since the likes of Pep, Johnson, Langford, Fitz, Dempsey, Tunney, Baer, Schmeling, Stribling, Carpentier, LaMotta, Graziano, Gans, McGovern and Liston (to name a few) are all known or suspected of being involved in fixed fights at some point, yet no one considers their careers "suspect". They're all in the Hall of Fame!
The thing is they carried overmatched opponents they didn't have guys lay down for them. There is a difference imo.
Harry Thomas claimed he was paid by Joe Jacobs to tank his fight with Schmeling. Graziano was linked to an attempt to fix a fight with Rueben Shank (Graziano was subpoenaed to answer questions before a grand jury, though the fight ended up being cancelled anyway). There were rumours at the time that Tunney vs Bartley Madden was a fix.
If Carnera fell on top of him and Schmeling couldn't get up in time to beat the count, would it be a draw??
Why would Schmeling's camp need to bribe Thomas? Max would be a short favourite to beat him? Graziano never fixed a fight as far as is known ,he failed to report a phoned attempt to bribe him to lose to Shank. Rather than put himself in the **** with certain people he feigned an injury and the fight was cancelled. I've no info on the Madden fight.
Possibly because Max was in line for a rematch with Louis? A loss or bad performance could ruin everything. The Graziano issue was a pretty big deal and he ended up being sanctioned for not reporting a bribe. Some people thought Tunney-Madden was suspicious and there was an investigation. I can't say whether or not any of those fights was fixed, just pointing out that Carnera is in good company when it comes to fix allegations. He had some shady characters around him, but then so did Graziano, and Tunney for that matter. It was a shady era. For what it's worth, there are also some other Graziano fights that don't pass the eye test to me, though I have no actual proof they were fixed... This content is protected
