:good This is also how i see it. Max is a special fighter and tougher than anyone Liston beat. He would put it all on the line. Would be interesting to see how Sonny gets on against a great fighter putting it all on the line.

Liston didn't exactly get blown out for his title, he meekly coughed it up one round after attempting a furious rally while his challenger was blinded.

He certainly didn't crush Machen the way Ingo had. People idly speculate about what might have happened if Eddie had made an honest attempt to win, but too many of them haven't watched the complete match. Machen didn't run as much as commonly supposed, and attacked liberally with his hook. Can't see Liston taking him out in a return.

I'd have liked to see Eddie fight Sonny or get a rematch without a torn ligament in his right arm [incurred six days before their fight]. Watch how Eddie fights Sonny. He's essentially a one armed man, using his left almost exclusively. Liston would rematch Whitehurst twice in 1958, but he wasn't about to risk a title shot by rematching a two handed Machen [sensible enough, but a return go with an unimpaired Eddie might have been extremely interesting].

Machen would fight Liston with a ****ed up right, but Sonny would surrender the biggest prize in sports with a supposedly bum left shoulder. [For whatever it's worth, Sonny landed the final punch in losing his crown, and it was a jab.] Watching round six of Clay-Liston, and comparing Sonny's use of his left to what happened to the right shoulder of Danny Williams against Mark Potter, I just don't buy it.
