Yes but Louis had more than three times as many fights against people ranked in the top ten.

Meaningless in an era where Braddock, Baer and Primo became champion.

Agree with much of this. The power difference seems pretty obvious though.

Liston isn’t going to shuffle around and drop his jab the way Louis did, so I don’t see how Schmeling has any plausible chance in this fight. Sonny absolutely punishes him for as long as the fight lasts.

    Not really.

I don't think that the top ten of Liston's era, were a lot better than the top ten of Louis's era, with the exception of one or two men.

Both brought back in their primes, I'm assuming that Max gets to see Liston's fights as Sonny gets to see Schmeling's. If so, Max will be prepared, and bring a bag of tricks to the ring, designed specifically for Sonny. This would be a tough fight for both men. I would expect Sonny to win via late round stoppage, but he would have to eat some surprising punches from Max along the way. If Max can work this into a decision, or pop Sonny enough to wear him down, he just might win it. My money, however, would be on Sonny.

Max gives a much better account of himself than Patterson. He'll take a brutal beating in the process over several rounds or as long as the fight lasts, but he'll get a few licks in before the ref counts ten over him.
