Nah, not much faster. You’re exaggerating And like I said, handspeed is overrated, louis was so much more powerful and stronger. Even if you give Floyd the edge in speed, it doesn’t mean anything
Louis looks pretty damn fast to me here. This content is protected And the right leads he repeatedly drops Pastor with here look every bit as a fast and perfectly thrown to me as the right Tyson dropped Holmes with. This content is protected Incidentally these weren't cherry picked. I happened to already be on Youtube and just clicked on the first two videos I saw in the sidebar.
There's always a reason, but it isn't always a good one. Sometimes people with exceptional abilities become known for a particular strength that wrongly overshadows other areas in which they may be just as strong, or nearly so. Beethoven is supposedly king of the emotionally profound and sublime, and Mozart the agile, lighthearted virtuoso, and yet: This content is protected Charlie Parker is more known for his blistering technique than the matchlessly innovative Coltrane, and yet: This content is protected
Schmeling was a good solid, all-around fighter, indeed a better than the average champion. Maybe better than Patterson. But he is the current benefactor of a wave of over-enthusiastic boxing revisionism. I can't recall anybody than saw Schmeling in his time-frame seeing him as an ATG. We don't generally rate Buster Douglas on his one perfect fight, nor should we do so with Max. The Schmeling that Sharkey out-boxed in their first fight, or the one of the Baer fight, the Max of the second Louis fight-though I give him a break there, he was old for the time- or the first Hamas fight, was no all-time great. The fabled right-hand was actually a lot more unsuccessful than the much-maligned Ingo's- and who in the hell did he fight with Floyd's speed of foot, never mind his hand speed. Daft as it may sound. Patterson was hard to kayo, easy to floor but a survivor a lot of the time. Patterson on points for me, unless he doesn't be positive enough, a la his fight with Ellis. Great match-up though.
Nat Fleischer rated schmeling 9th all time heavyweight. Called him the "most underrated of hw champions" Max did have a period of a couple years 33-34 where he lost his focus mentally, didn't train as hard, and lacked confidence...but he pulled it together in 35-37 with some fantastic performances Max resume speaks for itself Johnny Risko- schmeling only man to stop him Young Stribling- schmeling only man to stop him Mickey Walker- did very well in heavyweight division. Schmeling tuned him up Joe Louis - Might be the single greatest performance ever in a boxing ring. His plan was incredible Jack sharkey- hall of fame champion, got badly out boxed by Schmeling in the 2nd fight. Highway robbery Harry Thomas- title challenger Walter Neusal- top 10 Steve hamas- Schmeling ruined his guys career Paoliano uzcuden- title challenger Schmeling knocked all of these men out except sharkey and uZcuden
Over time the talk of his handspeed has dulled in favor of his awesome power and precision. Dig deep enough tho and there are plenty of anecdotes.
