Can anyone accurately describe Slapsie Maxie Rosenbloom's style? When I find any info on him, it's usually anecdotal, or pertaining to the number of fights that he had and so forth, but...what I want to know about him is, did he qualify to be considered a defensive wizard of some sort? He more or less had to be based on his complete lack of a punch and all those damned fights he was in! Was he adept at blocking and parrying, or was he the "slip and bob of the head" type, like Locche was?
Maybe an answer to my own thread question is in this, the lenghtiest article I've ever come across about Rosenbloom....the "Harlem Harlequin"....it's very interesting, and I'd like the opinions of the forum just the same. http://www.scandalpark.com/blog/sports/the-harlem-harlequin/
Thanks for posting that. I've always wondered about the guy. This OUTSTANDING resume, but no fight films, and I've read very little that satisfied my curiosity. I'll bookmark that and read it later. A few times I went to start a Rosenbloom thread like this but got thread-angst and talked myself out of it.
Boxed Ears, I think that maybe Maxie would have been a bit like my man Jimmy Young in a way, but also sort of like a big Sammy Angott with the holding and negative physical stuff...maybe for all his color, he was not the average fight fans cup 'o tea as a fighter, especially with all the slapping and all.
Never seeing Maxie Rosenbloom film of him fighting but reading about him,he was an anomoly,in that he had a powerful built associated with a puncher, but though he threw volumes of punches he hit with an open glove.Think Joey Maxim, but many times busier, and much the superior lightheavyweight. Rosenbloom had 299 fights, beating the likes of Walker, Slattery, JH Lewis [3],Braddock . Couldn't kayo him. One of the best LH fighters, and quite a character...
