Ok, so Amir Khan has a May 15th date on HBO.. potentially against JMM although thats still unknown. Campbell Vs Ortiz on the undercard

Here is what i'm not getting. Khan is an unknown in the US, yet media outlets are saying Khan could take 5 million pounds from the fight. Where on earth are they getting this from?

I can't see anyway in which Sky can PPV it unless it is JMM he fights and even then casual fight fans will not stay up till 4am to see him fight.

Perhaps HBO/GBP have seen the Hatton fan circus and just assume that the same will happen for Khan because they've been sold on him being a huge star in the UK and he's also British like Hatton

There's no way over 1000 fans go to see Khan. It just won't happen. I really don't think they can build any sort of fanbase for him. He's been taken away from the British public too soon and Americans will never support a English-born Muslim of Pakistani descent.

well you know khan right?...khan,whether we like it or not its well known in europe, and its getting to be known here, also something that i hate its that if he fights marquez, somehow the star its khan, and that's why he is getting that much, also if the fight its rigged, and that is a strong case since both fighters belong to gbp,the are banking of the destroying of marquez and it will pay dividends later on for gbp,so to them,i think the investment its well worth it......khan marquez..khan bradley...khan valero...khan paquiao...khan ortiz...remember that weights dont mean much this days!!!

whats your ethnicity?? beacuse you dont know what are you talking about....we "americans" never like ricky hatton that much and he is white..but we "americans"embrace the likes of paquiao, barrera, vitali and wlad, lewis, kotzya, gatti and the list goes on and on...if he is good he is good..he is being promoted by the most powerfull promoter here in the u.s,they know what they doing and it doesnt matter if he is black, grey or white......didnt khan moved out of england because the english would never accept his background???.....this is 21 century!...by the way your comments suck!:-(

90 % of the american boxing fans are either latino, black or asian.... I think they can relate better to a English-born Muslim of Pakistani descent, then a white Ricky Hatton........

Khan made huge money in Britain. He shouldn't have brought race into it. There are some who dislike him because of his ethnicity, yeah, but many people didn't consider that, when they supported him.

America is a much more xenophobic and racist country than Britain. It's in your culture, even. If you think Khan will get a good reaction over there, you are misguided. Even Hamed knew that post-9/11, he couldn't be popular in America.

Where the **** did you get 90% from?

I've looked at the numbers and the majority are Hispanic, white and black. It seems there is a bigger percentage of Hispanic fans, but white and black fans make up an equal percentage. As for Asian fans...thats nonsense.

I don't think it should matter, but it does to a lot of people, which is why I mentioned it.

I'm from Khan's hometown, by the way.

    So what if you are?

Khan fans always go straight for the race card for everything, I'm sick of it. He's really popular for what he's done so far and you're swinging wild assuming Yanks won't accept him.

I will be honest, I personally think Khan will not make it because he is muslim and pakistan is his first country (see his earlier fights and which cricket team he supports etc)

Sadly the prince gave reasons to hate muslims as boxers, dont get me wrong, I go to the mosque myself but i never force my beliefs like the prince did in an arrogant way

I dont think there is a world where boxers of pakistani descent can be popular in countries like america or england

please dont get offended anyone by the above posts.

i hope his fan base does grow tho even tho i doubt it will, the guy can become a sensation, hope he keeps his feet firmly on the ground

    That wasn't aimed at you.

So? Yeah, it's an assumption but it's also a prediction. I'm not bribing race I to it without cause. The thread is about his popularity and his race is connected to that.

We will see though. When he flops hugely because Anerocans are ignorant, I will have been proven right.

I think Khan could win them round and I hope he does. He could become this generations Joe Louis after Jack Johnson. I really hope he can do that and isn't written of, when people see his name.

    Good post.

Bernard Hopkins and Brother Naz are Muslims as is Danny Williams. I'm sure there are others around.

There will always be some haters but I'm sure the vast majority of boxing fans are not ignoramuses.
