So what we have here is the wild swinging force of nature that was mayorga at this stage of his career having beaten vernin Forrest twice and andrew lewis V A honeyghan still a,world champion a good boxer or slugger but definitely past his best and slipping badly due to the deterioration/neglect of his considerable skills but still a top fighter Who takes it what happens?
well I think honeyghan is as talented a welterweight as I ever saw......he could move well be a real slickster very elusive and with a very wide repertoire of shots. Superb body puncher......he was also a true power puncher in the mould of a Julian Jackson but u don't hear that on the forums.....to knock a Gianfranco Rosi absolutely into lala land with one punch in his hometown was no coincidence.....even don curry a noted puncher had to floor rosi multiple times to not get the same effect.....than he had the fastest world title knockout.....he annihilated johhny bumphus....knocked out the very durable vaca and cheung with a single punch in each instance...this power puncher could be a reckless maurauding slugger........the honeyghan of 1985-86 was the perfect blend of the two.......the late 1988 was already slipping and too ready to slug it out.... that's the one facing mayorga.....so heres what happens.... They come out with honeyghan moving and boxing......mayorga rushes him and tries to manhandle him.....the action in fast and furious on a par with haggler-hearns they brawl to the bell and after.......the second round is the same....in the third honeyghan looks on the point of collapse......the action is so hard....than at the end of the round he pivots on the ropes and drops a perfect single right to the solar plexus and mayorga falls like a defeated dog gasping for air and is counted out for the count
