I see your point Ech, but as far as Cotto not being a winner. Cotto has fought 37 times as a pro fighter. Having squared off against the likes of Shane Mosley Ricardo Torres Antonio Margarito Manny Pac Zab Judah Joshua Clottey Carlos Quintana Chop Chop Corley Randail Bailey And has a career spanning three weight divisions. He has only lost 2 fights in his entire career thus far. One has a handwrap issue hanging over it, (while I dont put much stock into that personally) and the other is against the greatest fighter arguably of our generation. Think its a little much to say Cotto is not a winner. IMO.
Kirk, Cotto is a solid fighter. He is skilled and naturally gifted, but he lacks a combination of things that will keep him a 2nd tier champion imo. A champion that can't beat the Champion. That said, Mayorga ALWAYS has a chance. He pulled it off against Vargas when I thought he couldn't, he almost pulled it off against Mosley when I agve him almost no chance, and I think that if he catches Cotto, he can hurt him as Cotto has showed us his chin can be dented, and broken. Cotto isn't known for his defense. I usually tend to agree with you, but I think you either chose wrong word or way off when you say Pac is arguably the best in our generation, maybe you meant Era, as in 2003+.
Top Rank competing with HBO show so Bobfather goes for a name and a personality. Smart choice. I'm cool with this over Martirosyan.
I think the point i was trying to make didn't come across right. Yes, Cotto has had a great career. But I was trying to say is that even though his fan base is huge doesn't mean he will win fights. At this stage of his career his chin is very suspect, and even though he has an entire island behind him, and many many fans across the world, don't give him this fight just on that. If he brawls with Mayorga, I see hm coming up short. he would need to BOX, ala Mayweather, go big on counters as Mayorga tends to swing wide. But he needs to get out fast, Mayorga can PUNCH. I hope i cleared that up. lol.
Ya Uli, I did use the wrong wording, I said our generation and I should have said my generation. I dont know how old everyone else is. But for my generation (25 years old), he is the greatest fighter, imo. Who would you place higher man out of fighters relivent to that age bracket? But ya, I should have said era. Generation is too vague and varries from person to person depending on age. However, as to the point. I agree with you. I dont ever see Cotto beating another REAL champion again. I dont ever see him beating another top tier fighter. Ive got no problem with that opinion. My problem was classifieing Cotto as 'that doesnt make him a winner'. Which is what my entire post was addressing. :huh As for Mayorga, yes he pulled it off against a completely, completely shot vargas, a vargas so shot that honestly.... what was transpiring in the ring was borderline sad. And in that fight, Mayorga took his fair share as well, and showed why he himself is no longer a top shelf fighter eather. That fight, was three years ago. The Mosley fight, is over two years ago. The man has since went on to fight one time in the two year span he will have between the Mosley KO loss, to fighting Cotto. Does Mayorga have 'a shot', of course he does. Prime for prime I would have Mayorga stopping Cotto mid rounds. And this will have hangover effects to where yes, Mayorga 'can' give Cotto fits in spurts. However, this fight sure isnt 50/50 in my eyes, and to suggest so I think is underrating Cotto, and overrating the version of Mayorga we will be seeing in 2011. Not saying I am not going to watch however, of course I will be watching. I am not dissing this fight at all, Cotto fights the who's who of boxing and after this fight will probably be matched up in a fight he is the underdog in. And it is two of my fav fighters of all time. I say this fight sucks because, I dont want to see eather guy lose at this stage, and obviously in this scenario, one of them has to lose. It also sucks because I dont want to see all the abuse Cotto will take pre fight lol. As for the fight itself, if Mayorga can come out with some sort of 'not as good as I once was, but as good once as I ever was' type beginning rounds, almost like he had in some rounds against Mosley, this fight will be very interesting early on. However, I count on Mayorga being too old, too worn, too slow at this stage (Mayorgas effectiveness against top opponents relied heavily on his underrated quickness) and hes no longer this unpredictable windmill. He falls into throwing the same sloppy punches over and over and over. I expect Cotto to be able to outbox him, and when he does get hurt, weather the storm, come back the next round and continue to outbox him. While it wont surprise me if Cotto is troubled early on by Mayorga, as this fight is still held in the shadow of the fact I think Mayorga is one of Cottos biggest nightmares if this was 4 years ago. That carries over today for me to Mayorga still giving Cotto some fustrations. But it WILL surprise me of Mayorga is able to actually beat Cotto. I confidnetly make Cotto the heavy fav in this fight, to me, having this fight as 50/50 just because Mayorga 'could hurt' Cotto isnt doing the matchup justice at this stage. Again, this fight sucks for me. Eather way one of my fav fighters is going to lose, and I am thinking very heavily and comfortably, that it will be Mayorga. Which I suppose is for the best at this point anyways. Would like to see Cotto regain some momentum and go on to some better fights. That is my take on this fight. However, my initial post was simply the point of Cotto not being a winner.
:good And you're right, if Miguel doesnt fight smart, this fight gets all the more dangerous for him, that is for sure.
cotto will be smart with steward in his corner and win this in more than convincing fashion. Have faith brother kirk he will do it up!!
Hell yeah! That sounds alot better than Cotto vs Mayorga. But knowing Mayorga and Margo they won't do it because the money won't be there. Those two fighters won't headline an event by facing each other.
