What was that? Never since the day I was born have I seen a more pitiful offensive performace and intimidated fighter in a World Title Match! Spinks was running, throwing pitty pat punches and jumping on the ground to avoid contact. Spinks made Dirrells performace look like The Stand of Thermopylae in comparison. Spinks, you were terrible! No way you won that fight! If you Spinks fans want to claim a big victory, go ahead. Us Mayorga fans are moving on. But even you know who really won.
It takes 2 to tango, and mayorga looked foolish in there. this fight made me realize that mayorga wasnt the elite fighter i thought he was, and things only went downhill after that :-(
I agree 100% that fight was indeed a robbery I had it 8-4 or 9-3 Mayorga. Mayorga out-landed him and was throwing the much harder shots while Stinks ooops I mean Spinks was just trying to survive.
How can you fight someone when they are jumping on to the canvas to avoid contact when you get close? I have never seen such rubbish.
No way was that a robbery. Spinks outlanded mayorga who would land maybe 3 clean shots all fight. Spinks but on a boxong clinic.
Spinks clear ud! Whoever started this thread must not understand the judges scoring criteria. Forrest is the one who got jobbed in the 2nd fight with mayorga.
Your acting like Spinks actually showed up to fight. He didnt. I don't see you win a title by showing up, running, buying time, doing nothing, jumping to the ground.
Your wrong. Spinks was never and has never been intimidated by anyone. Mayorga fought someone who had excellent footwork, and who constantly turned and countered him. Did Spinks land heavy shots? No. He isn't a puncher but he landed punches throughout the fight and kept Mayorga from landing effectively. Vernon I thought won the rematch, but the mistake he made was he didn't turn Ricardo. He went straight back or ducked under. Big mistake because Ricardo falls over the top and hits you behind the head. And you can't counter because he is over the top of you. Spinks rarely ducked under and he turned Ricardo as opposed to going straight back. And because he did this calmly, the judges weren't given the impression Ricardo was intimidating Spinks or being remotely affective. Another fight to look at of Spinks is his fight with Taylor which I had him winning. And I believe Emanuel thought so too, that is why he was so animated. When you don't have a punch, and you go into a fight with a much bigger man, and calmly use footwork and defense the way Spinks did......INCREDIBLE! Because he was so outgunned against Taylor. A few others have said what I am about to say.....but I have always felt that Spinks southpaw cutie style was the TRUE stylistic nightmare for PBF. That doesn't mean other styles can't beat PBF, I just mean the type of style and consistency that Spinks had in his prime (when he wasn't struggling with weight) would always give PBF trouble. Spinks attributes: First class footwork Quick hands Excellent right jab Solid chin Underrated mental and physical toughness Good work rate Very slick defensive fighter ......his negatives Very weak puncher Issues with weight Not always consistent in putting in quality gym work
Hells yes he was. Mayorga dictated the pace of the fight. Mayorga landed the better blows. Mayorga wanted to fight, spinks did not. Mayorga scored two KDs that weren't counted. Spinks was jumping to the canvass to avoid a fight. Spinks only landed piddy pat punches. Spinks did not do enough to dethrone a champion. Spinks was KD twice but was not ruled. Ref was biased against Mayorga. As many fouls Mayorga was commiting, Spinks doubled him in illegal conduct in the ring.
Cory Spinks belongs to boxings most talented family, and he is seriously underrated because his style is boring Hes too damn inactive, ****ing don king :-(
I only saw the fight once back when it happened.... But I seem to remember something about Mayorga not being awarded a couple knockdowns.
