Mayorga vs Trinidad, awesome fight

It was one of the best displays of a chin I've seen. You could make an argument Mayorga left his chin there that night...up to then, his chin was as tough as Margarito's...

Early Signs?

As I said earlier, Kim broke the story of the hand wraps and brought up the stories of Fernando Vargas and William Joppy, both of whom which were dropped by monster Trinidad left hooks. Fernando Vargas, who lost to Trinidad in December 2000 in which he was dropped a total of 5 times, mentioned that while in Puerto Rico promoting the fight with Trinidad, a man affiliated with boxing went up to him and told him to check Trinidads wraps. William Joppy, Trinidads next opponent after Vargas, who was dropped 3 times before the fight was halted after 5 rounds, was also warned of Trinidads hand wraps by former Heavyweight Champion, Hasim Rahman. Although neither fighter at the time paid much attention to the hand wraps, both did mention that Trinidads shots had an unnatural feel once the story broke. Joppy believed Trinidads hand wraps were equivalent to getting into a street fight with brass knuckles, while Vargas said, When I got hit, I was like Mike Tyson just hit me. I knew he was strong, but this was ridiculous. I couldnt believe what he was hitting me with.

Mayorga took enough powershots from Trinidad to knock out a horse and yet he managed to come back time and again to give as good as he got. Really amazes me, especially after the fifth round, how Mayorga would be totally spent and yet come back and get back in the fight with deadly blows to Tito's head and ears. Mayorga had the heart of a lion! :good

I agree! Mayo actually didn't get the credit he deserved....when I came in here telling everyone that Mayo did well I got hammered! Mayo lost to the bigger man and more skilled opponent but his heart, will and wildness made this fight incredibly fun and unexpectable. I thought Mayo might be able to catch Tito and KO him.......but it was evident he didnt' carry that concussive power he had at 147 up to 160 where this fight was held.

Hell no, better than Margarito's. Margarito never faced a prime Trinidad and so hard to tell how good his chin is.

When Mayorga started gassing/getting tired only then is when he went down due to a body shot, not a head shot. Tito's power = overrated due to illegal hand wrappings. thats because mayorgas chin is made of iron until tito has soften it up . he did take forrest best right hand and wiped his face in the tito fight he was hurt from titos 1st devasting shot but he didnt wanna show but deep down inside he was hurt you could just see his face expression which said everything

He did say Echols, in his pre-fight build up to face Trinidad. If he repeated that statement after the Trinidad fight, I never heard it. In Fact, I've always been curious to hear what Hopkins and others have to say about Trinidad's punch since all the allegations seem to really be hurting Trinidad's integrity and punching power with many fans I've talked to.

I think most of that was Hopkins corner trying to **** with Trinidad and play mind games. The thing is, the other corner is always allowed to inspect the handwraps. If they see something they dont like they should request they be rewrapped.

Also the arguement that Hopkins won only because Tito's hands were wrapped properly is silly. Hopkins didnt allow Tito to land **** on him. He wasnt being hit with the flush shots that Joppy and Vargas were getting hit with. He won because he was more skilled than them.

I agree, though I doubt Hopkins will say anything different since his camp started the allegation to begin with. I think Hoya and Winky should come out and say something about it. Especially Hoya, since him and Tito are tied together in history.

It would also be interesting to hear what Tito's sparring partners had to say.

It would be nice, any information would be appreciated. And although it's impossible to tell exactly. Trinidad's punches looked pretty strong to me in his fight with Hopkins, but he just missed them, and didn't have an answer for Hopkins skills, while Hopkins had an answer for anything and everything Tito tried.
