Duran was a kid from the streets, he didn't have the luxury for a long amateur career when he was struggling to help put food on the table for his family.

Panama in the 1950s & 60s was a land of grinding poverty for a majority of the people.

Btw Duran did have an am career though not as long as Floyd's:

Floyd Jr had a much better life than that & could afford a long am career where he could gain experience & learn from his mistakes.
