Floyd Mayweather, if he chooses to keep fighting for years to come (and I'm betting his gambling addiction will determine that), will see his first defeat. Mayweather's formula for success for his entire career has been exploiting his long reach advantage, crazy-evasive footwork, ring smarts, extremely sharp reflexes, grueling training camps, and lastly, just about the fastest hand speed in boxing. This has always been Mayweather's trademark. Watch old H.B.O. telecasts on youtube. Watch the replays. Floyds moves are always the same: opponent throws a punch, Floyd throws a punch a fraction of a second afterward -it connecting on his opponent and floyd still having a fraction of a second to duck the opponents simultaneous punch - all this in the same move. Floyd's hands have been so fast, he can connect and draw them back into the defensive guard before the opponent has time to connect. But things are changing for Floyd. We're seeing him get hit more. We're seeing his blazing, evasive foot speed going away. Declining reflexes can account for getting hit more. And, an athletes body in his mid-30s cannot endure the same intense levels of training it did as a younger man. This looks exactly like what we saw in Roy Jones Jr. at about this age. Suddenly, Jones was getting hit with solid punches. There was just something that had changed in his skills. Father time. And, this also played out in Ray Leonard, who also had athleticism like mayweather. Mayweather will have many returns to the ring throughout his 30's and 40's. As Fifty Cent just quipped, Mayweather is out there living the rap video life. Mayweather has lost millions at a time in gambling losses betting on sports. This alone will keep him in the ring for years to come - as a continually-declining athlete who's body betrayed him. Think I'm wrong? A guy who calls himself "Money", who garishly parades it around, who seems so addicted to material things - and who clearly has a taste for high-stakes gambling - Mayweather's future will be filled with dire financial straits and ill-advised returns to the ring. Count on it.
His reach is as long as it gets 147lbs and lower. Hell, his reach is as long as it gets at 154lbs as well, he just doesn't have as big an advantage at that weight.
I'm not sure I agree with all of those claims, but I don't think Floyd is going to continue to dominate in a Hopkins-esque fashion like so many others do.
It has just been brought to our attention that as Floyd gets older, he will continue to age. atsch Thanks for that groundbreaking insight.
Its funny when you say we see him getting hit more bc he is still getting hit way less that everyone else and his opponents in the ring. As his reflexes and foot speed goes his mind gets sharper and his chess game gets better in that ring. He doesn't have the foot speed that he once had but his foot speed is still fast and that foot work is still by far the best in the game. He can also bang on the inside and his defense works best while on the inside. For the next 2 or 3 years Floyd can fight and the only way I see him losing is if he gets caught with something big that puts him out.
Floyd has also proven to be remarkably adept at blocking punches, something I've noticed as he ages. He will see almost everything coming, even the punches that land on him. I think the main thing that will suffer as he ages is his offense, not his defense. I think the book is out now. He relies on fast twitch type movements to unless his lead hook and lead right. Hell, even his jab to the body is like something out of a video game. Cotto and DLH both used the high guard to effectively neutralize Floyd's pot shots and it took him half the fight to mind**** them and find consistent openings, as his punches are a little easier to see now.
mayweathers fundamentals **** on jones. hes close to shot now but even then still outfoxed miguel cotto. he out bodypunched the body puncher. how long he can keep that up i dont know but it cant n shouldnt be that long. floyd also has better durability than jones. expect to see more brawls like that
deal I agree age is catching up with him but you don't have to be a rocket scientist to ralise this.. However the comparison with Jones is ludicrous. Roy was a great fighter who used his speed of foot and reflexes to avoid being hit. He had no real defence and like brnxhands says fundamentally floyd shits on jones. Floyd is very clever in the ring and his skill set will allow him to avoid being hit even now his speed of foot is not what it was. He can stand there and not get hit much so this is testament to how good his boxing defence is. In comparison, when jones slowed down he was a sitting duck cos he never had a defence.
To suggest Roy Jones had no fundamentals is ludicrous, you don't learn to throw triple hooks on athleticism alone.
obviously but we are not talking offence are we? I think it was roys lack of defence that ultimately saw to him being sparked out on more than one occasion. his legs went and he could not evade attacks any longer. laying up on the ropes with no real defence will always see you ktfo...:thumbsup
of course he had decent fundamentals, i never said that but not on floyds level. When roy slowed down he looked lost. floyd slowed down he just made slight adjustments to his his game
