I'm serious, it's a cult classic. First of all, Baldomir's baffled furrowed brows between rounds is worth the price of admission. He is trying so intensely hard, and continues to try with the same intensity all through the fight. But never has a man connected with air molecules more forcefully and more often than Baldy did in that fight. One can feel Baldy's frustration, his comic, cartoon-like frustration, as it steadily intensifies throughout the fight. As for Mayweather, he's simply riffing. He's not taking part in a conventional boxing match and he's not playing to the crowd. The crowd, with their glum faces, quite clearly doesn't get it. They're not in on the joke. But he is in a way performing. One round he comes out throwing only uppercuts; the next round he's working a looping right hook; then he switches to a lead right hand; and then it's a round full of left hooks and jabs to the body. In a later round he fights Baldy in the telephone booth (Baldy misses a lot in there too). One round he's moving, the next he's shoulder rolling and fighting off the ropes. Every so often we see a little smile appear on Floyd's face. Floyd is amusing himself. The crowd doesn't get it, of course, but Floyd is performing a little comedy act, a little boxing vaudeville. And poor Baldy doesn't get it either. I don't know why this fight is maligned the way it sometimes is. Of course it's not competitive. But if you want to see a virtuoso boxer do just about everything in a single fight, all the while not getting hit, I mean, really, ever -- then give this "fight" a chance.
I think Baldy produces a pretty spirited and solid effort in defeat. Seriously, he does a lot of things right in this contest. He works himself into position to punch, targets the body, and never seems content to throw one punch at a time. But Mayweather operates not just on a different level, but in a different stratosphere in this fight. I remember enjoying the spectacle when I watched it. It's always fun to see a master play off an unwitting foil.
I've always loved it. True Boxer that night, neautralised Baldomir completely and beat him up. Hardly got hit at all and didn't allow size to factor into it. Wanted pink gloves for my next amatuer bout and my coach told me 'only pussies wear pink!' :-(
Floyd said it himself. He graded himself a C for that fight. He did what he had to do but you are making much more of it than what it really is. A boring ass fight that was anti-climatic. Vernon Forrest was more impressive against Baldy than Floyd was and had his stock rise more so than Floyd did because of it.
But who was Floyd fighting? Dlh fight was already verbally and ready to go before Baldy. But the fact that Vernon was able to get a network date for fighting a Piccirilo type of fighter when he was practically non existent for years speaks volumes.
Fighting a virtuoso performance vs. a top fighter is one thing. It's another when it's someone like Baldomir, a fighter who was decent, but moreso fortunate and lucky to get a shot vs. a spacecase like Judah.
