Mayweather, Calzaghe - why rate Mayweather higher?

These two are very much on the same level, mainly because Calzaghe is 35 and has declined significantly.

Anyhow, if you quickly compare the two:

    Similar speed
    Similar reflexes
    Similar chins
Similar power (now Calzaghe has declined)
    Mayweather has the better cross
    Calzaghe the better jab
Mayweather slightly better defence(Calzaghe is just as hard to hit when he is being evasive)
    Calzaghe significantly higher work rate
    Both have china hands.

It is pretty clear these two are on a similar level, these "Floyd the universally accepted P4P number 1" is rubbish. It is simply wrong and immoral. There seems to be a rule whereby Mayweather has to be ranked number one. But in reality nobody can say with any certainty Mayweather is better, not really. It should at least be challenged.

Of course prime Calzaghe is clearly ahead, but there is nothing to separate Calzaghe and Mayweather today - the media just use this "undisputed P4P #1" gimick to sell Mayweather's fights.

It is just like the "SRR is the all time P4P number one" rule. That one though is blantantly wrong and cannot be defended in anyway whatsoever. The "Mayweather rule" is far more legitimate than that.

As far as #1 P4P overall skills, then you have a debate (albeit a flawed one). Because if we were just talking pure skills, then guys like Judah would be up there as well.

Over their whole careers - who fought the higher level of competition?

Most veiw competition by the caliber of the fighter - some view it by the ranking and/or status of the opponent.

When you start naming the opponents - you have to ask - were they known - who did they beat - so on & so on.

You're going to get a lot of different & good arguements on this one.

Judah is nowhere near the top.

    He is a flawed boxer.

If boxing matched lasted 3 rounds then he might be, but you have to take endurance and mental talent into account.

Mayweather and Calzaghe are two of the most effective boxers in the world in a 12 round fight, Judah is not equipped to anywhere near the same extent to win boxing matches.

Being world champion in 5 different weight classes is pretty hard to argue against. I would say that would be the main reason why Floyd is Number 1 and Joe is number 2.

Why say that? calzaghe has a lot of great victorys under him kessler eubank lacy , a remarkable achievement in boxing his record, his skills speak for themselves give the man credit, at least this topic brings up points of both sides and a topic to discuss, then u jus ruin it by saying that!

When people say Mayweather is the best in the world they are usually refering to his skill, not his victories as such.

So any casual fan tunes in hears "P4P number one". This means the best in the world to them, they don't care who Judah, Kessler or anyone really are.

Mayweather may or may not be the best in the world, but it is disrespectful to other fighters round about his skill level that this is spoken as though it were the gospel truth.

The Pacmans, Calzaghes and Guzmans (or insert a fighter whom you personally rate highly in place of Guzman) out there should at least be mentioned. These fighters (along with everyone else) have zero chance of gaining that P4P #1 title in the current environment with it's 'Mayweather rule'.

    Rubbish? :D

Do you people really expect a fighter who is only well known inside his homeland to be considered "p4p no" 1? :-(

Skills, accomplishment and world recognition goes together in this.

Guzman? Why does he belong in the same sentence as Mayweather and Calzaghe?

My post has been edited a little from it's original state, due to my strong percieved 'bias' towards Guzman.
