Well someone's gotta be ahead of the other. There's a 9 years gap between Calzaghe's first and second most notable wins (Eubank in 97 and Lacy in 2006), period during which Mayweather beat Hernandez, Corrales and Castillo (twice). A better resume earned Mayweather the best P4P title.

I fail to see what Calzaghe did, since 2006, that surpasses Mayweather's achievements. He deserves kudos for his win over Kessler but that's not enough to bump Mayweather off the first spot.

The context P4P is used in refers to someone being the best. Not the person who has fought the greatest level of competition. The way the broadcasters use the term, they are telling us you cannot debate whether there might be a better boxer in the world than Mayweather.

I aint arguing with the guys achievements! cos mayweather has fought the best! but dnt discredit joe for wht he has done in boxing either cos he has had to dig deep to win sum fights in that period and basically ur saying he fought nobodies!

P4P means best fighter in the world (in Boxing) and sum people can argue that joes skills are better and sum argue that Mayweathers are better but dnt make joe look as he is a loser!

There is a ranking system in place...You go up in rank depending on who you beat and how you beat them. Floyd has done more, he has beat more champions that Joe. As a result he is referred to by the experts and boxers as well as the best. It's pretty simple. It's not astro physics...

He has also climbed up weight divisions and taken titles in those divisions...

I would really like to see Joe Fight Pavlik and Dawson...I think he get more praise beating them than a 43 year old Hopkins...

Unfortunately the media and therefore a great volume of mindless fans will give Calzaghe credit for beating up Hopkins in a mismatch than for beating Dawson.

Calzaghe will get a load of credit (including credit in the P4P rankings - simply because Hopkins is famous, like Oscar and Judah and Hatton but 10x worse), but it is a joke. I agree with you entirely here.

A fighter is ranked based on what he does...Mayweather has done more in the sport. Joe is a great boxer...one of the best but he hasn't piled up the resume that Mayweather has and in the boxing world skill is proven against proven fighters. That is where Mayweather is ranked higher than Joe...

Joe can do a few things to rise up to the #1 spot...He can fight Pavlik, Dawson and grab one of the Heavyweight titles and then he will have done what Mayweather has done...He would be #1 in my book and probably the boxing world if he won those 3 fights...

But he hasn't so he is not #1...he is one of the best tho but you have to earn the #1 spot...

    To me, it's very simple.

Mayweather has fought BETTER COMPETITION and won titles in 5 WEIGHT CLASSES (130, 135, 140, 147, 154). Today, those weight classes are regarded as the most competitive in boxing (or at least WAY up there).

Calzaghe has fought softer competition, has dominated one division (168 ), and it has been recently a very soft division. From 1999-2006, JC fought almost all virtual unknowns and guys with totally padded records.

While JC did dominate his division, since Eubank, he has not dominated ANY great fighters. Lacy was one-dimensional and Kessler's record was padded with mostly non-contenders. In the end, what PBF has done is much more impressive. He has gained 20% of his original fighting weight in muscle and remained just as dominant. Calzaghe could NEVER do that.

I don't even know what there is to debate. PBF's resume is far superior, and until he loses, he is the man in boxing.

joe is a great great fighter but i agree. mayweather is fighting elite and different types of boxers everytime out. he can beat and dominate all boxing styles which i know joe can do too. but fighting that guy from the contender was pretty bad :D

He named 3 boxers, 1 of which was weight drained to **** and past his best, one has since been proven to be ****, and the other one we still don't know all that much about.

Compare that to the names Floyds beaten and you have to conclude there is one mighty gap between the 2 of them.

You can't criticise joe's ability he is a talented boxer.

but i think its going to be tough to call him an alltime great because of the lack of elite fighters on his record.
