I really don’t get the “record”? Maybe because he retired undefeated and as a champion? There have been a lot of boxers who were champions and racked up a lot more wins without suffering a loss...take Chavez Sr for instance....he was 89-0 before suffering his first loss to Frankie Randall. Ray Robinson was 91-0 before his first loss to Jake. Ricardo Lopez retired 51-0. Going way back..Jimmy Wilde was 93-0 before his first loss. The great Willie Pep, 72-0 before his first defeat.
Lol Right. ‘Money’ didn’t fight a mixed martial artist... he boxed him And Ali didn’t fight a complete novice in the sport he had been participating in for 20 plus years though did he? It was a match of some kind but sure as hell wasn't boxing. Lol And what if Floyd never backs up his words and fights McGregor in a cage like he said he would?? Would that put a stain on his ‘legacy’?? Even a little bit?
Most agree Mayweather lost the first fight with Jose Luis Castillio Punch stats! Castillo landed 203 punches 40%, accuracy. Money landed 157 punches, 35% accuracy. HBO's unofficial scorer Harold Lederman had Castillo winning 115-111. I thought 7-5 for Castillo was about right.
You seem to have miss the point. Legends have participated in spectacles. It doesn't matter if you don't respect it, It's not going to take any historical shine off Floyd because other legends set the precedence and historians love tradition and correlation. Boxing, not boxing, doesn't matter both are included in what I said. Legends have boxed nonboxers and they're still legends. Legends have participated in sports outside of boxing and they're still legends. Legends have drug their good name through the muck and the muck became legendary not the legend ordinary. As far as Money ducking the cage goes I doubt it'll matter any more than Johnson upholding the colorline. It's an anecdote that detracts from his claim to greatness sure, but it'll do nothing to stop the proliferation of his name. As far as will the future fans exalt him? Name a historical figure who isn't polarizing.
1. There is NO fighter in history who would turn down that type of money 2. Ali participated in a similar match already
This is a superb post, favorite parts bolded. It's good to see your particular insight, grasp of perspective and neat turn of phrase in action again.
Well, I am the king. Seriously though, thanks bud, I earned it I was hanging out with the black american boxing fan community for quite a while.
