Hopkins still is a smart fighter with good timing but that doesn't mean much if you can't sustain it for a whole fight. At 43 years old, he's reduced to having to pace himself and hold a lot to try to slightly outpoint his oponent.

Hopkins doesnt use speed....not at all.

His timing tho is among the best the sport has ever seen. Its why he is still considered to be (arguably of course) the best counterpuncher in the game....even with his lack of speed.

And YOUVE DONE COMPARISONS??? What did you do, meet up with them both and play hand slap???

Joe is still faster than Taylor...be serious.

    :fight

No, speed and timing are two entirely different things actually. A slow as **** fighter can have great timing. A fighter who is BLAZINGLY fast can have terrible timing.

    Speed sure helps timing though.

Wow, that takes balls by Pavlik to move up like that.

    I give him props.

For Hopkins to take on a young gun like Pavlik, is a bold move.

    Hopkins is a hard man.

5 years ago Bernard Hopkins wins this and makes Pavlik look silly, taking all his assets away from him. I think what his last few fights have shown us is that he does have more difficulty fighting 12 rounds at a fast pace. This is really Pavlik's fight to win or lose more than anything.

A slow as **** fighter can have great timing, but he is going to have to be fighting a slow as **** fighter to land. Speed kills. Especially well timed.

pavlik has nothing to win by taking this fight. even less than if he took on winky wright. I give much credit to pavlik for taking this fight but i dont see why he didnt try to fight abraham or someone else at MW or SMW.

Hopkins knows he will win the fight. Kelly Pavlik has a nice one-two, but he's going to have to be more elusive and show more variety if he hopes to outland Hopkins.

People comment about Hopkins stamina, but Bernard will build up such an early lead that he could lose the last 2 rounds and still come out with the decision. This is my pick anyway.

    Hopkins UD.

No it doesn't. If you are blessed with great timing then it doesn't matter. You can be effective with every punch you throw.

Now if you have great timing AND speed then you truely have something special to work with but speed has no relation to timing whatsoever.

I mean yeah...speed always helps...but timing is not predicated on speed. Not in any way.

As I stated, think about who the top two counterpunchers (the skill that involves timing the most) are in most peoples eyes...

    Hopkins
    JMM

When you think about those two, do you think of speed? Its probably the LAST thing you think of with the two of them.

There are probably a dozen threads on this. One for every fight Arum tried to make and sign. I think in the end HBO wanted this fight.

Pavlik is the heaviest handed fighter MOST PEOPLE would face.

I am not a big fan of his (I think he is exciting and good...but terribly overrated), but even I have to admit that his power is among the best Ive seen at MW.

I'm a huge die hard Hopkins fan and i can guarantee you one thing.......It's going to be a boring ass fight. Hopkins will make sure of that. He will move and clinch, break up, move and clinch, get in a right hand lead, move and clinch.

And yeah, i think it will go 12 rounds and Pavlik will win unimpressively on the scorecards but it will be close enough where Hopkins will ***** about it for the rest of his life. :good
