cause the first fight proved everything that mayweather said de la hoya would go hard get tired fatigued then quit and the interest went away after a horrible fight
My theory... Keep in mind, the first fight was a split decision. For the second fight, Oscar was going to go back to Floyd Sr. as trainer. At the time The two Floyds were not getting along. Floyd Jr. was scared at the prospect, ever so slight, of him losing to a guy with his dad in the opposite corner. It would be like losing to his dad.
floyd won the fight, the ppv was the biggest in history. If the rematch was going to happen, then floyd wanted a much bigger purse split, equal to dela hoya's. Oscar obviously disagreed. Both men had good points in this disagreement. While oscar would maintain he was the bigger draw, floyd would also maintain that oscar highest pay day was with him and that he was the champ, p4p number 1 he deserved a much bigger purse than the previous one. Both sides wouldn't budge, oscar wasn't getting any younger, so moved on.
Floyd retired. There was probably a lot of pressure from his family not to fight Oscar again because his father would be in the opposite corner. That would have been awkward to hear Floyd Sr say stuff like "Keep jabbing! Go to the body! You can knock this motherf*cker out!"
I did'nt think it was that! bad, of coarse it was no where near what we expected, it was also far from entertaining, but I'd rather watch this than him fighting Mosley, Marquez any day of the week, least Oscar was competitive. After a couple of rounds it became abundantly clear who was going to win that Mosley fight, but what made it worse, was watching an old fighter who couldn't react to anything to make it more competitive.
I can't think of a single thread or poster on here at the time who was in favor of a rematch. As soon as it was mentioned as a possibility the whole board was in outcry lol. Funny how times change. For the record I enjoyed the fight. In a drunken haze I had Oscar slightly edging the fight. But I rewatched it the next day and saw it was a reasonably close but clear decision for floyd.
