So you're saying Floyd is so talented that training & talent are enough? (i agree)
Because being relatively active has to be beneficial to a boxer.

:thumbsup Can you imagine if we end up with another SRL-Hagler type fight? two great fighters getting it on, albeit past their best.

I want to see Floyd be more active because I'm a fan of his.

Rewatched some Amir-Maidana last night. What I noticed was even Maidana managed to slip in some right hands at Amir in the first round.

I think it depends on the fighter. If he genuinely doesn't want to fight, for whatever reason, I think it's better to be inactive. Boxing is as much mental as it is physical and I don't think any fighter who has to drag himself to the gym, is prepared to fight. If Mayweather is just enjoying his life, his money and so on, and will be back when he wants to be, I don't see any issue. He hasn't had a tough career and whilst aging is inevitable, he's not shown any serious decline. Of course, fighters do get old overnight sometimes but I can't see that being the case with Mayweather. His style isn't the type to get old overnight, whereas guys who fight face first are prone to aging quickly. As a pure boxer, Mayweather's decline will be long and slow and his inactivity is probably the best way to avoid it speeding up.

Dont you think though, that even though Floyd is a technical fighter, that he relies a lot on his reflexes? that, that could be just as significant?

McCallum and Hopkins were skilled fighters, but they've never been particularly quick in most people's estimation, and so probably acclimatized better against quicker opponent by being more adept at timing their opponents.

i'm with unclerico and have to commend the floyd fans on this thread. i no longer could count myself among them (as i've trashed him quite a bit on here) but everyone is being mature and giving solid and informative posts

There may be a gap in defensive skills, there is not a gap in talent overall. Pacquiao is a superior offensive fighter to Mayweather, as proven by his dominant stoppage wins over better guys than Mayweather has ever beaten down, such as Barrera and Cotto.

I can definitely see his reflexes fade away but then he still has his ring iq that will prevent him from ending up like roy jones. It would make a fight between him and pac/khan/martinez etc. way more competitive I think. If floyds legs are slower or if he doenst have his reflexes this version of pac knocks him out.

Oh agree, cant see that happening.

One positive for Floyd, is even though I said he might be slightly different to Hopkins in terms of relying more on his reflexes, Hopkins at the age of 36, was still able to move for almost the whole fight against Tito, so why should we think Mayweather at 34, wont be able to do the same?

Khan is great to watch when he utilizes his handspeed but at this point Mayweather would light him up like a Christmas Tree. Too much experience & Ring IQ for Khan to handle. (I consider Ring IQ and Ring Generalship beasically the same so that's why I just said Ring IQ)

And yes, as a Floyd fan I do worry about his inactivity & ring rust catching up to him one day. It better not be against a very talented elite fighter like Pacquiao or, if somehow this match happens, Martinez.

I wouldnt worry too much about him slowing down too much more(he is a lil past his best now) if the fight happens in the next 18 months! My biggest worry in a fight wit pac for mayweather has always been his punch output and stamina not his speed or power(both of which I think mayweather could handle) I dont believe mayweather likes a fast pace of a fight from start to finish his timing of his counter punching on the night will have to be impeccable!

The thing is, Money May has an Iron Chin. There's no blueprint to beat the man. None.

Im not worried about his age yet, we know that he takes care of himself and he stays in the gym. Also we have seen that he has been very able to adjust his style to suit him going up in weight and accounting for his age (he moves less and pot shots more and doesnt put punches in combinations)

So all in all I think he can continue to be at the top for another 2/3 years yet.....whether he could make a run like 'Nard I doubt it but if you had asked me 10 years ago if 'Nard or Glen Johnson (for that matter) would still be around my answer would have been a HUGE no!

So what do I know? LOL!
