You can't compare those two fights. Everyone matures differently as fighters at different ages. Tyson at 20 years of age looked phenomenal.... but looked less so at 30 years old for example. Right now Teo Lopez looks the absolute real deal. Canelo on the other hand, if you compare him how he was then to what he is now the difference is night and day. Floyd got him when he was green and taught him a lesson............ we can also pull out the weight drain card but I'll choose not too as Canelo is an absolute **** for doing it now himself..... no doubt something else he learned from Floyd.
What bothers me about Manny is how well he handled and out muscled people like Joshula Clottey. Diego Corrales was a huge super-featherweight and he was battered by Clottey, whereas Pacquaio was bang bang bang bang, dominating big welterweights. I watched his fights against De la Hoya and Hatton after the Loma fight and he reminded me of Roy Jones at his peak, in that he seemed unbeatable. Mayweather on the other hand never left me with that impression ever, especially after he moved up from super - featherweight. It would have been hard to bet against Pacquaio, had him and Mayweather boxed in 2009.
I used to love watching Pacman in those days. Easily one of the best i have seen in my lifetime if nto the best suring that run. Forever leaves a sour taste that he didnt fight Mayweather until 2015! Crazy when you think about it. Biggest disappointment in my time following boxing and thats what started my general decline in interest.
Hardly green, he had 42 fights, defended his WBC super welterweight belt 7 times and just unified against Austin Trout. I think Floyd would still beat him today aged 43.
I agree, @nurological Mayweather's genius was TIMING. I learned the hard way not to bet against Pacquaio, first against De La Hoya, then Hatton and finally against Cotto. Watching Manny do to welterweights what Loma did to featherweights is crazy, considering he did the same to Barrera and Morales at feather and super-featherweight.
There is a myth that Floyd just got everyone on the slide,or too early ,or the wrong weight...... A lot of the boxers that were labelled them things went on to achieve plenty of titles and top performances ...Manny is still a champ to this day i believe? So what does that tell you about Floyd?? He could fight tomorrow and win a belt....it is incredible
Floyd was a great champion. Nullified opponents strengths and worked on there weaknesses. A true 'adapter' in the ring. Even if he had lost a close fight, I'd back him to win if there was a rematch. His punch stats are phenomenal considering the opponents he faced. He's the greatest of this generation imo.
I know what your saying mate but the fight was there to be made after pac beat Hatton when they were both arguably at there very best , floyd beats him any time in there careers but beating Pac-Man at 147 at that time would of been one of the best wins in the history of the sport ! people use the needle excuse along with other factors but floyd holds the key to these fights and would of been unreal to see that fight then rather than 5 years later
Floyd would beat any version of Canelo, how people forget it was he who demanded to fight a 36 yr old version whom he expected to crush .
Arum and Freddie shakes came up with over 100 excuses from catchweights to drug tests, Floyd said yes to their 10 million dollar per pound weigh clausedepite never failing to make 147 ever. Floyd, had one demand and that was the drug test and Manny and his team ran for the hills to fight Clottey!
