If Mayweather fights him next and beats him and retires, would he get credit?

Not today, but probably 10-20yrs down the road if Canelo turns into a hall of famer, new fans of the sport will come in and see Canelo on Mayweather's resume at the age of 35-36 and they will say wow Mayweather beat a hall of famer like Canelo at the age of 35-36. Mayweather was a beast.

he would add another world title and another lineal title to his resume...plus he'd have a win over someone 14 years younger

If Victor fights like he is capable for the next 8-10 years that win is going to look a lot better. Also if he fights Khan thats why beating these new guys are important before he leaves

    [edit]

if he really cares about that stuff he has nothing to prove though can just pad his legacy now

alotta ppl wont give him credit because he hasnt fought pacman, if he fights pac then ends with saul alvarez yeah of course with out no pac then its up in the air.

but then if its a couple fights down the road and especially alvarez if he woops p willy then goes n fights cotto or sumthing n then may vs canelo happens it will help mayweather get more credit but like i said if pac aint on the resume alotta ppl wont give him credit , and floyd dont care about that either

He'll get credit for taking the fight, and putting up a valiant effort leading up to his TKO loss.

beating Saul won't do much for him as of now

in the future, possibly still nothing. Saul doesn't look like future atg material

Floyd has 2-3 fights left. Fight people that matter

Floyd will get credit if he beats a real prime ready alvarez who lets say is coming off from beating williams in sept and cotto in december.

Your still bitter that you lost enjoy that avi bro... Canelo will be TKO'ing your hero soon possibly when he's on his way out and payback all that Mexican money he gets rich from and DLH passing him the torch... when Canelo is ready and MAY's has over riped DLH will match him up for once of the biggest paydays since the DLH May fight...

Yes, but it's what he achieves in thhe rest of his career that will decide just how much credit her gets.

Unification bout against an undefeated fighter in his prime who is only going to get better, win or lose Floyd gets credit, I am almost liking that fight more than a Pacquiao fight at this stage.

I'll give Floyd credit if he takes that fight. Not on a PAC or Martinez level but I would rate it higher than his Cotto or Ortiz fight.

Reserve our thoughts until after the june 9th event, I smell upset... it may just make more sense to fight Canelo the man has a huge following in Mexico and here in the states.
