I wouldn't say he sat there and planned on waiting for certain fighters to age, but taking two whole years off boxing, having 5 total bouts in the last 5 years, and being a defensive fighter all give him an advantage compared to other fighters as time wears on, regardless of whose "fault" that is.

Are you talking about the defense of "I'm retired" or the defense of "I'm on vacation"?

Mayweather has been in the ring very infrequently over the last 5-6 years while the other fighters have been fighting. Hence the difference between ring years and chronological years. Had Mayweather fought the other guys schedules, even with his style he would have more wear and tear.

It's like explaining **** to my 3 year old nephew.

Name me one other fighter who benefited from inactivity and I'll name 5 who suffered from it.

Nicely said. I think he's aware of this too, that's why he's done that. He's very smart at calculating the risk and rewards. I personally think the only reason why he decided to fight Cotto is because him and his team have in their mind that Cotto isn't as good as he used to be. All you gotta do is listen to Roger when he said he'll beat Cotto as easy as he did Victor Ortiz, which I think is laughable because Cotto is much better than Ortiz is.

Apparently, Mayweather is impervious to ring rust too. Fighting once a year perserves him, while layoffs only serve to deteriorate other fighters.

Floyd is an awesome fighter, but are you seriously counting the Marquez fight as a "fellow" champ? That's ridiculous. pac and floyd have fought all the same guys and looked vastly different against all of them. Now they are STILL fighting the same guys.

I don't get how a guy a fight or two after fighting one of them is a bad win. Basilio had so many beatings before he beat Sugar Ray Robinson. He had 12 losses, some of them bad, before he beat Sugar Ray as the smaller guy moving up. Great fighters are great fighters even if they lose, Cotto is good on either resume, as is Mosley.

Pac and Floyd have fought all the same guys. Yes, Floyd has seemed to wait a bit longer to fight them. Oscar, Cotto, and Hatton should have smashed pac. Floyd would have always been the favorite over any of those guys, and he should be and is a huge favorite over this Cotto.

It is interesting that time off makes Mayweather better. I think it's because when he fights a lot his hands hurt and he has more will to punch hard after 12 months, but his reflexes fade very little. He is clearly a special fighter, though. Time off really doesn't seem to detoriate those reflexes. Leonard had off 3 years before Hagler.

Mayweather is going to destroy Cotto.....and if they fought right now I think he would destroy Manny. However if Floyd waits another 2 years to fight Manny...it might be a terrible idea. If Floyds legs go a little and his defense gets leaky....it would not be good to be in with a guy like Manny, who although will age himself, will retain his power and combinations at least for probably another 5 years id say. The offensive fighter has the advantage as fighters age in my opinion.

ok, but all different circumstances, and the main thing was age with all those fighters. Mayweather stays in shape. Also I forgot to mention Hopkins, who's also had 1yr. and half layoffs and benefited from it.
