I watched the fight and listened to the post-fight interviews. Mayweather is too proud to admit that his time in lock-up has changed him and made him a better person, but it clearly did. He was so generous to Guerrero and he stopped his father talking the Guerrero team down after the fight. Classy. What a great fight, what a great performance by Mayweather. The greatest fighter of his era. How can anyone not enjoy a performance like that? I used to greatly admire Mayweather's performances but I disliked the man. Now, I am convinced how good Mayweather is for boxing and I start to respect him more and more as a person too. I am becoming a Mayweather fan. I hope he will give us five great fights against the best out there around his weight-class and I hope he becomes a great and very successful promoter. Anyone else find Mayweather is winning you over?
I liked the way he told his dad to cool it,and I shouldn't be shocked by the hate after the fight but I still am. I never doubted his ability for a second, but at one point I hated Floyd. Then,in the build-up to Hatton,I became a fan. Now I'm a big fan.The guy is keeping the sport at the edge of the mainstream, and Saturday was an absolute masterclass. I'm just glad he's still around and I'm glad I'm able to appreciate his skills. Unlike some.
Absolutely! I wanted him to win the fight, though of course I get accused of being a hater...but he's carried himself very well and I noticed him pushing his dad away at the end, was good to see - hopefully he'll finish his career as more of a role model instead of a trash talker which I know sells, but there was too many double standards in things he comes out with (though Mayweather was full of it, he was never pathetic like Adrien Broner) I still hope he takes on a couple of big fights - be it Canelo, or even Pacquiao if that guy has anything left in his next 2 fights. If he beats them (or even just Canelo at this point) then he will deserve all the accolades, but he does need to make up for not giving us fights against elite fighters at their peak when he could have instead of a ridiculous amount of inactivity... But yeah, he was all class in and out of the ring against Guerrero
His longevity at the top of the game and the consistency of his high level of performance over time in themselves add a lot to his legacy. The man is the ultimate, consummate professional. He is entirely, obsessively, compulsively dedicated. Mayweather has the same attitude and mentality as the best and most successful scientists, doctors, lawyers, financiers, entrepreneurs, artists and academics out there. He has less in common with the wanna-be gagsta hoodlum he sometimes pretends to act like than almost every fighter in the game, and in terms of his attitude and aspirations and actual decisions, he is the polar opposite (the assault on his former partner aside). Mayweather is the American dream incarnate and he is the embodiment of the ultimate American.
I predict that he will end his career as a classy role model too - not someone who pretends to be classy, but someone who really is classy - not someone who acts classy because he thinks it is good for his image, but someone who acts classy because he wants to act classy. :good
Dece, He's always kind of been like that. He's got his issues like everyone else, but a lot of it was just an act to drive the promotion of himself and his fights. He had a pretty calm and respectful demeanor leading up to and after the Cotto fight last year too. Check out the feature piece in the immediate first few minutes from 2001: [yt]PtuLTS-IpEY[/yt]
That's the kind of Mayweather whose just a tw*t - but there was a difference in the Guerrero fight, you'd struggle not to notice it
Yeah, thanks for that. I think Mayweather went bad at some point and now he is walking back towards the light. His issues are, I would say, considerably bigger than most people I know. He comes with a very troubled family background and I'm not surprised he went off the rails for a while. The fact that he had managed to keep his **** together professionally for so long to such a great extent given his issues makes it even more remarkable. People who are highly successful and driven in one area of their lives can change in others respects too, if they put their mind to it. Look at Tyson as another example of a man who has changed.
Real Floyd fans already knew he was a good dude at heart and didn't let the media blind us. Now his time in jail and age may have made him more mature and made him appreciate life a bit more. He has a lot more positivity in his life. He's reunited with his father, the fighters on his roster have had success, his children seem happy, and there has been nothong but positivity while working with showtime.... also, that 20 mill can't hurt lol. Also he isn't getting treated like **** in the media these days. Overall he just seems a lot happier and looks like he's living a more stress free life.
To be fair, behaviour dictates things. Media will portray it in worse possible way but his behaviour contributed to that. As I say, it's not like there's been no change since his prison stint, becasue there has. How we behave when things go badly is more important - it's easy to behave when everything is rosy
