Plenty of fighters were better than Ali techically. That wasn't what the man was about at all. He was an athlete with remarkable boxing sense and mental fortitude.
Well you really can't compare the two, IMO as they are two hugely different weight classes. Could you argue that PBF would still be as mobile and skillful at Ali's weight of 215 as Ali was? I don't think he would be. Ali, if he somehow were to get to PBF's weight range would only be faster than he was originally because he weighed less.
Man. Ali was better at everything. People have been saying Mayweather is better defencivly. What I would say to that is that prime Ali hardly stands still to get hit, so nearly never does. In the fights that I have seen Ali gets hit less than Floyd when he doesn't want to be hit!
Skill-wise, the Mayweather at 130 was better, but resume and legacy wise, as well as dominance wise(against top comp) he doesn't even belong in the same sategory as Ali.
Ali got hit WAY more and hurt WAY more than Mayweather. To say Ali was better defensively with his hands so low and being as prone to the left hook as he was is simply being ignorant and kissing up to the old-timers too much. Ali is a far greater ATG, and accomplished much more. He was not a more highly skilled fighter.
Rumble young man rumble! Ali fought everybody that was out there at the time, and dominated the HW division during one of the divisions best eras. PBF avoids the best, and consistently takes the path of least resistance. Of course for comparisons it may be more useful to compare PBF with fighters closer to his own size. There are at least a dozen ATG's between 130 and 147 who would eat him alive, and many others who would present us with a 50/50 fight. We just did a thread on this in the classic section. Boo
