He's a different type of great. No need to compare legends. You just need to agree that they are both great fighters and that's that. If Mayweather thinks that, he's a fool.
ali pre '70 WAS more skilled defensively.yes his hands were low but his reflexes and feet were so fast that it was virtually impossible to land clean on him in that era.sure very early when he was inexperienced banks floored him with a left hook as also did cooper which was before ali won the title and at that moment he was clowning with cooper.you had to be around at the time to appreciate this but really he was phenomenal.having said that mayweather is close to genius defensively you'll not hear this old fella putting him down.
He's NOT better than Ali, not in terms of skills or competition or accomplishments, plain and simple. Won't even bother arguing, done so countless times, this thread is pathetic.
I was not arguing that Ali did not get hit more often. I said if Ali did not want to be hit it was ****ing near impossable for anybody to hit him. He had the fastest hands ever at HW, put his punches together much better than Floyd ever could and had much better footwork!
Yeah, maybe skillwise, but as the sying oes, and I'm sure you've heard it, "The opera ain't over 'till the fat lady sings". We have the benefit of having seen the entirety of Ali's career, and we haven't quite gotten there with Mayweather yet. Whether Ali is the greatest of all time will be up to us great boxing minds to debate about on these forums, and I sure as hell don't think he was the greatest fighter (Ali, that is) of all time, but whether Floyd will or will not be the greatest of all time hasn't been established as of yet. It's all about how well he does against adversity, as in, when someone makes him fight for his life after he gets up off the canvas, or injures him real bad, and whether he storms back into the fray to reimpose his will on the other guy, again, ADVERSITY. We'll see one day, that's for sure.
Wow. First off, for those that say I'm a troll because I haven't replied yet, I don't live at my computer. I usually check in once a day or so. Lennox Lewis was no Floyd Mayweather, either. Put PBF in a boxing ring with Ali, of course he is going to get his head knocked off. But if Floyd had stayed at 130lbs and he could be 100-0. Floyd climbed weight classes, he is a boxing sensation, whether you choose to condone his personality or not. There are people here saying Floyd hasn't faced the same level of opposition. BS. Mayweather has ONE split decision on his record (although I feel Castillo was pretty close). His fight against Hatton will be his 20th world title fight that he'll have been in and won. Judah had him down, not out. Floyd has climbed weight classes to fight champions, not bums. He is the best from 130-154. And then you have your Kelly Pavliks who would be just stupid for Floyd to test his skills against. Ali has one thing on him, he has shown that he can bounce back from a loss. If Mayweather loses, I'd like to see him go back and go to war with the man he loses to. That's the only way he's going to gain your respect, is if he loses. So why can't you respect a winner?
Why are you going on about the weight class's to compare them? Ali could not go up weight classes or down for that matter. So why mention Floyd "could have stayed at 130 and been 100-0"? We were talking physical attributes and things of that nature. We can respect a winner. He is just nopt better than Ali!
Well...I think let's just 4give this poor dude.Must have caught a Mayweather fume somewhere, and suddenly felt the urge to say something like that. Facts...i don't think Ali is the most skilled fighter ever to step on the ring...That honour,I believe, belongs to guyz like SRR,Greb,etc...We can all argue who was the absolute best at our own time...Personally I say Robinson..But like I say, that's for another day... Ali...however...if you consider his weight, his skill, speed, competition, heart, defence etc..all-in-one,probably stands alone at the top...never mind comparing him to Floyd Mayweather??HELL NO!!!! To all those who think we are sticklers for old-timers...I say go look at the first Liston fight(My all time favourite Ali perfomance, some say the Cleveland Williams fight, but I still say this one is the best)....the first three rounds were poetry.....Could'nt believe that a HW no less...could have that hand-speed..the poise of a dancer...beautiful combination punching. No wonder Sonny quit.Muhammad looked like a WW that night.Believe me he was that smooth. And I ain't even started on his resume' yet.Once you look at that....****** please. Floyd??Don't thinks buddy. Not even in the same vicinity.
