I've been hearing comments about Mayweather that he looks as good as he's ever done. Especially after his previous 2 fights (Guerrero, Canelo) these kind of comments were prevalent.

My problem with this is that his haters take advantage of it to act as though his age is a complete non-factor and doesn't need to be taken into consideration.

Now i can understand that casual fans who only know the man from his big PPV fights would see it this way, but more dedicated boxing observers should know better. Go look at his performances from when he was in his early- to mid-twenties, fighting at 130. The Mayweather we see now is not ANYWHERE NEAR as fast or fleetfooted as he was back then, nor for that matter as he was 10 years ago at 140

It's gonna be very interesting to see how much of his former self he can still be in his remaining 3 fights... And although i've hated on the matchup in the past, i think a speed-demon in his prime like Amir Khan might be a nightmare for a 37 or 38-year old Mayweather.

His wins are impressive because he's the older fighter relying on reflexes which usually are the first to go with age. He usually gives up a weight advantage as well.

And in general he has less power on his punches.

Dude IS old. Not 'getting' old. 37, pushing 38. That's a death knell in boxing traditionally. "It's a young man's game."

I honestly said a while ago for his career he wouldn't lose unless he fought after he was 36. So to me, he's already in that "it can happen any fight" realm of losing. The weak era and his strong fundamentals have allowed him to stay at the top longer.

Agree completely. Floyd takes exceptional care of himself, unlike ODH, Pernell, and several other former top fighters. Genetics plays a part, but Oscar was DONE in his early thirties, as was Pernell.

I think we may see him lose, or even get robbed (it's happened to the best) to "pass the torch". Any fight is a legit threat at his age.

As a man around the same age, training is certainly not as easy and neither is the recovery.

    Father Time is undefeated.

ooooooooh so when he beats Canelo and suffers absolutely no damage - "Oh my goodness what a wonderful masterful performance of technical brilliance! he has never looked better! can't remember the last time he did so amazing!"

then one fight later, despite taking absolutely ZERO damage in his last fight, he got old somehow? Nice try. Maidana B-level fighter (Roger Mayweather - he beat no one that impressed me) exposed Mayweather as a good but far from all time great fighter.

Sure Ali lost to Norton and Duran to Benitez, but unlike Maidana they actually beat great competition.

Floyd's age doesnt mean he's far past his prime. Lennox Lewis and Bernard Hopkins best years were in their mid 30s, Bernard even his later 30s. Tyson and Benitez on the other hand peaked in the early 20s. So Floyd's age is no excuse or proof that he got old.

Well the guy is going to be 38 soon. So it's really a no-brainer that he's slowed down a bit. He's not the same fighter he was at 25 when he was at the lighter weights and was considered an offensive and defensive virtuoso.

What makes him so great is that he's essentially in unchartered waters right now, he's doing something that no other fighter in the history of the sport has been able to do which is be the #1 P4P fighter at such an advanced age.

This guy was universally recognized as a top 10 P4P fighter in 1998, by 1999 he was considered one of the top 3 fighters in the sport and throughout the entire 2000's he's been at the very top of the mantle. For him to be in the P4P ranking for 16 years now is just unheard of.

I try to think of old timers that have had similar success from early in their career all the way into their late 30's and I can't think of anyone at all in this history of the sport aside from Hopkins. It's truly incredible what this guy is doing at this stage in his career.

I disagree with the majority of what you said.

So FLoyd isn't an All Time great fighter? A guy who's universally recognized as a top P4P stalwart since 1998? A guy who has tied Manny Pacman for 4 lineal titles? A guy who has beaten over 10 HOF'ers already in his career?

It's ok not to like Floyd, but to say he's not an ATG and discredit his resume up to this point is just silly and you must obviously have an agenda against the guy.

Not only is he a TRUE ATG, but he's also the best fighter in the sport since probably Ray Leonard (I guess you can make a case for Sweet pea or Roy Jones as more recent great fighters.)

I think everyone is so used to seeing him win so easily that when he finally is in a competitive fight, people want to meticulously dissect his game and try to marginalize his actual skillset and resume. He beat Maidana 8-4 (maybe 7-5 if you want to be nice,) and now all of a sudden he's been exposed?

Get out of here with that rudimentary analysis. Oh and btw, Lennox Lewis was MUCH better in his 20's than he was in his 30's. I don't know how long you've been following boxing for, but I have since the 80's so I say this as a person who saw Lewis' entire career, he was a better fighter in his prime than he was at the latter stage of his pro career. I don't even know how or why you would say something differently, than again you don't sound like you know too much about boxing in general.
