Bo Jackson had the ability to dominate two sports on the highest level. Name one other athlete who was ever able to accomplish what he did. Mayweather is the best fighter today pound for pound, but you need to get a grip with "best athlete ever".

lol @ that ESPN article listing all of Jim Brown's athletic accomplishments and then finishing with "and could have been a pro boxer after he retired"

WTF? Yeah he "could have been", but seeing as how he never fought a single pro fight, whether he would have been any good or not is a completely different question.

And LMAO @ Michael Jordan and Gordie Howe making that list over Deion Sanders. Jordan was a mediocre Double A baseball player and has a 4 handicap and he's suddenly a top 10, all around athlete?? haha Gordie Howe hit batting practise a few times for the Tigers and he's the 9th best all-around athlete of all-time. Laughable.

So no one is going with Armstrong, I know he's just a bike rider but I suppose I only understood once I got on one of those bikes and gave it a shot. Also he's running marathons and getting better and better.

Stephen Neal a lineman for the Patriots was also a freestyle world wrestling HWT. champion and 2x NCAA champ who outclassed Brock Lesnar in one final......So he's not a bad athlete.....

Bo Jackson is to me, the most athletic man I have ever seen. Granted, I have not seen many soccer players.

If Jackson had focused on ANY one sport, he would have been perhaps the best ever at any of them. He had WORLD CLASS sprinting speed, not just football speed. If he had focused on track and field, he would have been elite there. He was elite at football and baseball while not focusing on either one fully.

BTW, Mayweather isn't even the best athlete in his sport in a historical sense. And if we are talking about the most dominant athlete in their sport, I would vote for Gretzky. I am sure there are some other sports played across the globe I am unaware of, but of the major sports shown in the US, he is the one guy who in his sport, there is no dispute whatsoever that he is the best ever. The records he set are unreal.

    So only American sports qualify?

A top performer at soccer, rugby etc etc gets as much credit as a top griniron or basketball player.

There is easily as much money and prestige at top level soccer in Europe (Champions League, Premier League, La Liga, Serie A etc...) than in the NFL. Then there are World Cups at international level.

However I would argue all of the above are team sports, therefore whislt you may get great players, they are to be treated differently to individual sports.

All sports need different qualities. In fact if we are talking about pure athleticism then the best athlete must be... well an athlete or athletics star.

It's called deductive reasoning. Winfield was a star in college in both baseball and basketball. It was obvious that he was going pro in one of those sports(more than likely baseball). Dave Winfield never played college football, and is from Minnesota. So now the Minnesota Vikings come around(they are obviously very familiar with Winfield as he grew up in the state and went to college in Minnesota), and draft Winfield in the 17TH ROUND.

This obviously begs the question, why would a team draft a player in a sprot that he doesn't have the skill or desire to pllay? The answer is simple. The Vikings had already picked 16 players , and had no use for the 17th pick. Being that they couldn't trade the pick, they simply drafted hometown sports hero Dave Winfield as a novelty pick to grab headlines; knowing full well that he would never play for them.
