****in bang-on, Drew. I really have trouble not including it amongst his five or six best wins for all the factors aside from JCV's skill set or lackthereof compared to the likes of Chavez, De La Hoya, Nelson, McGirt or Ramirez, et al. It was a risky fight in which he could've very well been bullied and steamrolled. Size difference here was unmistakable, unlike say, his fight with ATG Nelson. :D

Why only focus on 2001, though? What about the three years that preceded Roy winning the 3rd title in '99?

If you believe the onus was on Dariusz to pursue Roy once the latter had collected the titles, you could just as well criticize Roy for circumventing his way around a Dariusz fight in the years prior to winning those titles.

As quoted by Jason Probst: The prospects for a Dariusz Michalczewski bout are "$20-25 million to fight him in Germany. After what happened in Korea, that's what I need."

You claim he's "frustrated," and yet he's the one upping his demands $2-3 million more than what he said he would be satisfied with a year earlier.

Like I said, "he said, she said."

Dariusz's people claim they're doing everything to make the fight and the other side isn't (this is even acknowledged in the links that you posted), and Roy's people respond by claiming the opposite is true. No one here can truly say which side is lying, or if either one is even telling the truth in the first place. Personally, I wouldn't trust either side farther than I can throw a rock (and I have a weak arm :D ).

A very reasonable inference based on the links you posted, and perhaps even a correct one.

But at the same time, based on the interviews with Jacobs that you posted, I think it could just as well be inferred that Roy was intent on making a glorified mismatch with Trinidad, who had no business fighting up at 175, and was reluctant to engage in a potentially higher risk/lower reward fight with Dariusz.

Personally, I think there's probably some truth to both claims.

Like I said, I won't defend Dariusz's behavior in this matter either.

But on the flipside, every time Roy was asked about his demands for this fight, he raised them - from around $8 million in '97 to as high as $25 million in the span of a few years. To me, that speaks just as many volumes.

    Rex,

    Thanks for your reply.

How did he circumvent his way around a fight?

Do you seriously think that Roy expected to paid that amount? He got around $17M for Ruiz at heavy. He had no intention whatsoever of going to Germany and that's obviously why he said he'd want that ridiculous amount. DM, Kohl, HBO and everybody knew that Roy wouldn't go to Germany. You've seen the video I've posted, and you know in 2001 he said "I don't think a knockout would be enough over there!"

You can't be seriously suggesting that Roy priced himself out with this statement? That's what he'd have wanted to go to GERMANY, (a ridiculous amount that everyone knew wouldn't ever be possible) but not to make the fight in the U.S. The various links, articles, and the video prove that Roy and HBO wanted to make the fight in the U.S. and they tried to get it, especially when they wanted to promote the fight with a double header. The U.S. fans had hardly seen DM fight, and a double header would have made it a huge fight, but Kohl wasn't interested.

Yes but once again, he was throwing figures around of what he'd have wanted to go to Germany, because it was clear that DM wasn't interested in going to the U.S. When reporters asked if he'd consider going to Germany, that's when he threw the ridiculous figures around. He didn't throw any ridiculous figures around for fighting in the U.S. though.

It's not he said, she said though is it? Look at the links again. You've got various quotes from Kerry Davis saying they couldn't get Kohl on the phone, and they were making things difficult, and they'd been trying to make the fight for weeks. It's all there.

Have you read the links? How could they have been doing everything to make the fight, when they refused the double header which would have promoted the fight and made it huge, and Kohl wouldn't negotiate with Jacobs and HBO?

I could understand if I'd posted loads of links of Roy stating certain things, but you've got links with quotes from HBO execs discussing the difficulties they had in trying to make the fight. Are you telling me that you're doubting Davis's quotes? He wasn't part of Roy's camp, he was the VP of programming for HBO, and he tried his best to deliver them the fight.

DM and Kohl refused the double header, they refused to negotiate, they never went to the U.S., and then what happened?

DM fought Joey De Grandis, and then Hall in a rematch.

But apparently they did everything to make the fight with Roy?

    Complete nonsense!

    Rex,

In those links, Davis said Roy needed a big fight, but DM was refusing to come to the U.S. and Hop and Trinidad had signed up for the 160 tournament. Roy wasn't intent on making a glorified mismatch with Tito, it was just a possibility, but again, Tito and Hop were out of the picture at that point anyway. But even if they weren't, Tito would never have fought Roy up at 175.

The fight with DM was there to be made, but DM and Kohl obviously didn't want to make it. They turned down the opportunity, to instead fight Harmon, Hall and De Grandis. After Hop had beaten Tito, fans were then desperate to see a Jones - Hop rematch. When it became apparent that the rematch couldn't be made along with the DM fight, that's when Roy decided to move up to heavy.

Rex, I respect your opinion. But again, he only threw around silly figures, and kept raising them, to fight in Germany, and he had no intention of going. He didn't throw silly figures around to fight in America. You can't tell me that after reading all of those links and watching that video, that you think Roy wasn't serious about wanting to fight him?

Those links containing quotes from Brad Jacobs, Kerry Davis, Murad Muhammad and Roy himself, are more than enough proof for me, that he and HBO wanted the fight.

Again, look what happened afterwards. Roy went up to heavy, and DM stayed in Germany fighting B and C class guys that Roy had already beaten, for a fraction of what he could have made against Roy. It's clear to me, that DM didn't want to take the risk of fighting Roy, and he was more than content to defend his WBO belt against the Hall's of the world for decent money.

It's been nice debating with you, and once again I respect your opinion, even though I don't agree.

    Regards, Loudon.
