Mayweather losing his star power? Blame Pacquiao

I don't think it is because of Pacman. I think people know that Floyd has handpicked a little, and they are not as excited about his fights. He will be challenged, but predictably he will win the fight by UD.

 

Floyd piggy backed off pacs name just as he piggy backs off all his opponents , his image, '0' record etc. FLoyd needs gimmicks to sell tickets. Pacquiao doesnt need Floyd to sell , he's exciting and ppl will always pay to watch him fight.

 

Guerrero isn't a big name and he doesn't have a big name on the undercard (Canelo on Ortiz) - it is in many way his least appealing fight out of all his 147/154 fights

 

1. Pacquiao - a lot of fans as well as Pacquiao supporters would watch Mayweather
2. Mayweather's opponent - Guerrero doesn't really have much of a fan base behind him. Nor is he a dangerous opponent.
3. Mayweather is past his prime.
4. Showtime - early days.
5. Mayweather falls for the 'If I'm earning the highest PPV numbers, I must be doing something right'...when he really just repeats the same things. In PBF days, Mayweather was taking full advantage of the limelight.

 

I think there are a lot of reasons.

Like said, the level of opposition, the undercard, the generation shift and the fact that more and more people are seeing he avoided the biggest challenges.

 

Without a Rival interest has waned. The FMJ/Pac fight was the reason people tuned into watch either of them in the kind of numbers we were used to seeing.

All the other guys currently fighting @147 and under are just not very well known or heralded.

Unless Floyd loses and a new rival is thus created, I don't expect as much fanfare as FMJ is used to.

 

I agree with the OP. I think without the superfight to speculate about Floyd becomes a little less interesting

 

I forgot to mention that when you claim to be the best ever but consistently avoids all real/live challenges, your credibility is diminishes.

As most greats would say 'I don't rate myself, others rate me'. The risk of false self promotion can backfire big time.

 

This is actually a very good point. Some of the lack of interest could be because of Pacquiao losing but another major factor is his choice of opponents. This is the second time now he picks an opponent with no chance in hell, the previous one was Ortiz. I've also stumbled upon an article earlier on my phone where it looks like he has plans to fight Khan in the next 18 months in England.

 

A decline feels imminent, and we'll see if it has arrived NOW shortly. He just did his best numbers aside from the DLH fight last May. However, Cotto brings his own fan base to the table. Pacquiao had yet to be KTFO. Canelo Alvarez was on the card. HBO, and their several million more subscribers (yes, I realize you don't need to be to order PPV).

That's quite a lot of things to consider.

 

Mayweather/Ortiz didn't sell out either.

Still had a better gate than Pacquiao/Mosley, if I remember correctly.

 

Not really. Floyd was the star & p4p number one, and Pac was the guy whos stock rose as the fighter to challenge him, not the other way round.

In terms of promotion, they used eachothers name frequently during their rivalry, but Mayweather certainly didn't make a name off of Pac, it's clearly in the other direction if anything.

They both did. Every time Mayweather was scheduled to fight he would say Pacquiao is next 100% leading up to the fight. Arum would do the exact same thing after he announces a Pacquiao fight.
